The underground ruins were utterly silent—until the sound of gut-wrenching retching echoed through the stone corridors, sharp and lingering.
Sakazuki, in the midst of sliding blueprints into his molten golden briefcase, paused at the noise. A knowing smirk tugged at his lips.
Clack!
He snapped the case shut, hefted it in his left hand, and with his right, grabbed the corner of the two-meter-long Maxim model. With ease, he hoisted the golden ship and strode out of the main chamber.
At the corridor, he called out, "Let's go."
Karol emerged first, grinning from ear to ear. Enel followed, pale as a ghost, one hand braced against the wall, his legs still trembling from the aftershocks of Devil Fruit nausea.
Seeing his sorry state, Sakazuki asked, "How'd it taste?"
The mere mention made Enel's face twist in agony. He clamped both hands over his mouth, groaning, "Don't talk about that thing!"
Sakazuki just chuckled, set the Maxim model on the ground, and walked over to scoop up Enel. He plopped the boy down on the deck of the golden ship.
For a three-year-old, the two-meter-long model was more than roomy—almost like a personal cruiser. Sakazuki gave him a nudge. "Can you use your powers yet? Give it a try."
Still catching his breath, Enel stretched out his hand. He focused, and instinctively, something deep within him stirred.
Crackle, crackle—!
Sparks of electricity danced across his fingers, the unmistakable snap and hiss of lightning filling the air. Enel stared at his hands, a goofy grin spreading over his face.
Sakazuki nodded, then pointed at a control lever on the ship. "Put your hand on that lever and channel your power. See what happens."
This Maxim model, though a mere toy compared to the real thing in the blueprints, was built to function the same way—just on a much smaller scale.
Enel placed his hand on the lever and sent a current through it.
Bzzt—!
Electricity flowed steadily from his palm, vanishing into the ship's core. Two seconds later—
Click, click, click…
The sound of gears whirring to life echoed through the model, starting slow, then picking up speed.
Whirrr—!
Fans along both sides and the stern of the Maxim spun into a blur. The ship began to rise, floating off the ground. Karol watched in awe, while Enel just gaped, mouth hanging open.
"Whoa!!!"
Satisfied, Sakazuki nodded. "Alright, let's move. Keep up."
He headed for the exit. Enel, unsure how to steer, looked helplessly at the controls. But Karol rested a reassuring hand on his back and, with a gentle push, guided the floating Maxim—and its tiny captain—down the corridor after Sakazuki.
—
At the edge of Birka town, Sakazuki pushed open the cloud tiles above and leapt out. Below, Enel sat atop the Maxim while Karol, with a single heave, lifted ship and boy out together. He replaced the cloud cover, then gently set Enel on the ground.
Sakazuki grabbed a corner of the Maxim, and with a powerful leap, he and Karol vanished from sight.
Back aboard the warship, Sakazuki safely stowed the golden briefcase in his office. With his mission complete, he stepped out onto the deck.
There, Enel sat on the levitating Maxim, surrounded by wide-eyed marines—Cricket included—all of them starstruck by the sight of a flying ship.
After all, flight and warships—what could be more romantic?
Sakazuki signaled for Karol and gave him a few quiet orders. Karol nodded, then strode to the front of the deck and announced:
"Prepare to set sail!"
"YEAHHHHH!!!"
The soldiers erupted in cheers. Months of drifting through the White Sea had left them itching for action. The novelty was wearing thin—their fighting spirit was ready to burst.
In the midst of the excitement, Enel sat quietly, his mood dipping as he watched the others. A sense of loneliness crept in.
Karol noticed at once. Kids really do overthink things, he thought with a sigh. He took Enel's hand and led him over to Sakazuki.
Sakazuki looked down at the downcast boy. "What's wrong?"
Enel, remembering the warmth and kindness he'd felt these past two days, felt his eyes sting. He turned away, voice low and awkward: "It's nothing. When are you leaving?"
"Tomorrow morning," Sakazuki replied.
"Oh." Enel mumbled, staring at the deck, lost in thought.
A moment passed. Then—drip… drip…—teardrops splashed onto the wooden boards.
Sakazuki's voice drifted over, calm and steady:
"Seaman Third Class Enel."
Those words struck Enel like a bolt of lightning. He looked up, eyes wide with disbelief.
Then, through his tears, his face split into the brightest grin.
"Yes, sir!!!"
Side Story Timeline – Ancient Weapons and Maxim
In the distant past, as the moon's energy ran dry, the moon people left behind their living automata to guard their homeland—and migrated en masse to the vast blue planet below.
They brought technology centuries ahead of the world's, splitting into four tribes: two settled in the White Sea, two descended to the Blue Sea.
Eleven hundred years ago, one tribe founded the golden city of Shandora in the Blue Sea. It flourished for centuries.
A thousand years ago, Shandora was still at its peak.
Nine hundred years ago, Joy Boy journeyed the world. He discovered not only a mermaid princess who could command the colossal Sea Kings, but also a warship capable of destroying islands in a single strike—and another formidable force.
Joy Boy named them Poseidon, Pluton, and Uranus, later known as the "Ancient Weapons."
Witnessing so much inequality, Joy Boy dreamed of building a kingdom of freedom and equality. Under his call, more and more races joined the "Great Kingdom"—the Three-Eye Tribe, another moon tribe, and others.
With the moon people came advanced technology and the mighty warships now called Ancient Weapons.
Inspired by Joy Boy's ideals, some people began adding the letter "D" to their names, founding the Clan of D—a legacy that would echo through the ages.
The Great Kingdom's philosophy spread far and wide, its ideals of freedom and equality shaking the very foundations of the world's nations. The dream was too alluring, too advanced.
Twenty kingdoms—including Alabasta—banded together, forming the World Government coalition to crush the Great Kingdom.
Details of the war are lost to history, but the legend of Ancient Weapons—capable of obliterating islands—was born in this era.
Despite their overwhelming power, the Great Kingdom fell. Only a few allied races fought to the bitter end, nearly wiped out in the process.
Joy Boy had the Kozuki Clan carve the Poneglyphs, recording the history and the Will of D. He entrusted these stones to friends from across the world, to be scattered and hidden, along with a prophecy for 800 years in the future.
Victorious, the World Government launched a purge to erase all traces of D. Despite fierce resistance, the cleansing continued.
Eight hundred years ago, the once-glorious Shandora was ravaged by war and reduced to ruins. Only oral legends survived—guardians of the golden bell and the unreadable Poneglyphs.
Blue Sea, Jaya Island
After escorting Cricket home, Sakazuki prepared to return to Marineford to report in.
Three days later—
Buru buru! Buru buru!
Karol approached with a Den Den Mushi. Sakazuki picked up.
As he listened, his brow furrowed deeper and deeper. Hanging up, he barked, "Change course for Kregxi Island. Full speed ahead!"
But even that felt too slow. Grabbing a sea chart, he checked the distance and direction. Satisfied, he flung his cape onto the ship, and his lower body turned to magma.
BOOM!
He shot into the sky like a living missile, blazing toward Kregxi Island.
Damn that Roger!!!
