Axel's finger tightened on the trigger, but he hesitated - Maya was too close to Nova Spire.
Ryder sensed Axel's dilemma and shouted:
"Fall back, Axel - we'll create a window for extraction!"
Ryder's team intensified their suppressive fire, forcing Nova Spire to duck behind cover.
Elliot seized the momentary distraction, grabbing Maya and pulling her towards Axel's position.
Axel sprinted forward, grabbing Maya's other arm, and together they dragged her to safety behind a nearby vehicle.
Maya coughed weakly, wounded but alive. Axel quickly assessed her injuries -
"Gunshot wound to the shoulder. We need to get her to medical NOW."
Elliot nodded grimly, eyes fixed on Nova Spire's position.
"I'll cover our escape. Ryder, fall back with Axel and Maya - we'll regroup at Phoenix HQ."
Ryder's team provided rear guard cover as they retreated towards their vehicles.
Nova Spire emerged again, firing wildly - but Axel and his team were already speeding away...
Suddenly, Axel's comms device beeped - an unknown number flashed on screen:
"Nova Spire's employer wants a meeting, Axel Vaughn. Alone. At old clock tower. Midnight.
Axel's eyes narrowed as he read the message - Nova Spire's employer dared to contact him directly.
He shared the message with Elliot and Ryder during their hasty debriefing at Phoenix HQ's medical bay, where Maya was receiving treatment.
Elliot's expression turned grim.
"This is either a trap or a desperate attempt to negotiate. Either way, we need intel."
Ryder nodded. "I'll dig into Nova Spire's communications, see if we can trace the employer's identity."
Axel stood up, determination etched on his face.
"I'll attend the meeting alone - but not unprepared. Ryder, hack into clock tower security feeds. Elliot, assemble a stealth team nearby, ready to extract me if needed."
Maya, still recovering from her wound, grasped Axel's arm weakly.
"Be careful... Nova Spire's employer might be Erebus himself."
Axel's eyes locked onto hers - a chill ran down his spine at the possibility.
Hours ticked by until midnight...
The figure stepped closer, voice low and menacing.
"I am Kael Darkhaven - Erebus's right-hand man. You've been causing quite a stir, Axel Vaughn."
Axel's instincts screamed warning - he kept his hands visible, ready to draw his weapon if needed.
"What does Erebus want with me, Darkhaven?"
Kael smiled faintly.
"Erebus is impressed by your... audacity. Destroying Umbra and Patriot's plans was bold. He wishes to discuss a proposal."
Axel raised an eyebrow.
"A proposal from the man who orchestrated global chaos? I'm intrigued."
Kael chuckled low in his throat.
"Wise skepticism, Axel. Erebus offers you a choice:
Join us, and together we'll reshape the world order...
Or refuse, and face oblivion - along with everyone you care about."
Axel's mind racing, he stalled for time.
"Tell Erebus I'll consider his offer. But first, proof he can deliver on his promises..."
Kael's smile grew wider.
"Erebus anticipated your request. Observe..."
He snapped his fingers - the clock tower lights flickered, and Axel's comms device beeped.
Axel stood alone at the old clock tower entrance, heart racing with anticipation.
A figure emerged from shadows - tall, imposing, with piercing blue eyes...
"Axel Vaughn. I've heard a lot about you.
Axel's eyes widened as he read the incoming message on his comms device:
"Phoenix Initiative HQ - power grid offline. Maya's medical team compromised."
Kael's smile grew wider.
"Erebus controls key infrastructure worldwide, Axel. Your people are currently at our mercy."
Axel's grip on his weapon tightened - rage and fear for Maya's safety warring within him.
"Release them. Now."
Kael chuckled low in his throat.
"Not until you agree to meet Erebus in person. Tonight. At his private island fortress."
Axel's comms device beeped again - Maya's voice, weak but urgent:
"Axel... don't come alone... they've taken Elliot too..."
Kael's eyes gleamed with triumph.
"It seems your loved ones are already on their way to meet Erebus. Shall we arrange your transport, Axel Vaughn?
Axel's mind racing, he pretended to consider Kael's offer.
"Alright... I'll meet Erebus. But I want proof Maya and Elliot are alive before I leave."
Kael nodded to someone behind him - a screen flickered to life, displaying Maya and Elliot bound and gagged in a dimly lit room.
Maya's eyes locked onto Axel's through the screen, her gaze pleading.
Axel's anger simmered - he knew he had to act fast to save them.
Kael handed Axel a secure comms device.
"Erebus will contact you on this frequency with transport details. Come alone, Axel Vaughn."
Axel took the device, his eyes locked on Kael's.
"I'll be there. But if anything happens to Maya or Elliot... Erebus will face my wrath."
Kael smiled coldly.
"I'm shaking with anticipation."
He turned to leave, then paused.
"Oh, and Axel... Erebus has a special surprise waiting for you."
Axel watched Kael disappear into the night, his mind already planning his next move...
Suddenly, his comms device beeped - a hidden message from Ryder flashed on screen:
"Axel, I've hacked Erebus's island fortress blueprints. Extraction plan ready. Waiting for your signal.
Axel's heart skipped a beat as he read Ryder's message - a glimmer of hope in a desperate situation.
He quickly typed a response:
"Ryder, plan extraction for Maya and Elliot ASAP. I'll infiltrate Erebus's fortress solo.
Signal me when your team is in position."
Ryder's response came instantly:
"Already moving into position, Axel. Erebus's fortress has a ventilation shaft on east wing - your best entry point.
My team will create diversion at north gate at 0200 hours."
Axel memorized the details, his mind racing with the impending mission.
He glanced at the comms device Kael had given him - Erebus's contact information flashed on screen:
"Transport arriving at 0100 hours. Come alone."
Axel smiled grimly to himself - Erebus had no idea Axel Vaughn never played by the rules.
At 0050 hours, Axel stood outside the east ventilation shaft of Erebus's fortress...
A faint noise echoed from within - Axel's heart rate accelerated Axel carefully removed the ventilation shaft cover and slipped inside, finding himself in a narrow, dimly lit duct.
He crawled silently through the ductwork, his eyes adjusting to the darkness.
The air was thick with dust and the smell of stale air - Axel covered his mouth and nose with his shirt.
After several minutes of crawling, he reached a vent overlooking a lavish throne room.
Erebus sat on his throne, flanked by Kael and several heavily armed guards.
Axel's gaze locked onto Erebus - piercing blue eyes seemed to bore into his soul.
Erebus smiled, his voice echoing through the room.
"Axel Vaughn. Welcome to my humble abode. I've been expecting you."
Axel remained hidden, observing the room layout and guard positions.
Suddenly, Erebus nodded to Kael - the guards dragged Maya and Elliot into the room, bound and gagged.
Axel's anger flared - he knew he had to act fast to save Maya and Elliot.
Erebus leaned forward, eyes glinting with amusement.
"So, Axel Vaughn - you've finally joined us. I must say, your reputation precedes you."
Axel remained silent, observing the guards' positions and waiting for Ryder's diversion signal.
Maya, still gagged, caught Axel's eye through the vent - she subtly nodded towards the east wall.
Axel's gaze flicked to the wall - he noticed a faint symbol etched into the stone: Ryder's extraction marker.
Erebus continued, oblivious to Axel's observations.
"You've destroyed Umbra, foiled Patriot's plans... but against me, Axel - you're just a pawn."
Suddenly, alarms blared outside - Ryder's diversion signal!
Guards rushed towards the north gate, leaving only Kael and two others with Erebus.
Axel seized the moment.
