The room was silent as the two scrolls hovered before him.Gold and black. Glory and rebellion.
Haeun reached for the black scroll without hesitation.
"The system already turned its back on me. Now it's my turn."
The moment his fingers brushed the scroll, a pulse of shadow rippled through the stone beneath his feet. The golden scroll vanished instantly, as if it had never existed.
The black one unfurled on its own—marked in crimson ink and laced with forbidden runes:
MISSION: PHANTOM ASH— Infiltrate a rogue Divine Vault in the shattered remains of Kyser's Fall, retrieve the relic of Echo Flame, and burn any records tied to the Nameless Seed before the Court finds it.⚠ High Risk.⚠ Death Possible.⚠ You will be disavowed if caught.Team Size: 2.
A second name appeared beneath his:
Caelith Vireen.
Caelith – The Crimson Wraith
When Haeun arrived at the rendezvous point—a crumbling tower on the edge of the academy's restricted zones—she was already there.
Tall. Sharp-eyed. Hair tied in a crimson braid down to her waist. Her aura didn't radiate power—it choked it, like a vacuum that devoured energy and emotion alike.
"You're late," she said flatly.
"Didn't know I was being timed."
She shrugged. "Time's not measured in seconds out here. It's measured in how long you stay alive."
Her gear was sleek—no academy insignia, no divine ornament. Just tight black robes laced with storage glyphs and two curved blades across her back.
"You know what the Nameless Seed is?" she asked without looking at him.
Haeun narrowed his eyes.
"No."
"Good. Let's keep it that way."
The Descent Into Kyser's Fall
The two slipped through an ancient gate buried beneath the academy's south ridge. No escort. No exit markers. Just stone and shadow.
The Kyser Ruins were once a celestial city—a divine experiment destroyed by its own creators when the residents tried to ascend without permission. Now, it was a graveyard of twisted metal and cursed memory.
As they passed into the dead zone, the ley lines began to flicker unnaturally. Static buzzed in Haeun's ears. Time felt slower. His heartbeat stuttered.
"The Vault is at the heart," Caelith whispered. "It's guarded by echoes. Remnants of souls who failed to ascend."
"We fight them?"
"No. We run. If they touch your spirit, you'll never wake up again."
And then they moved.
Vault Echoes – Spirit Eaters of the Past
The further they went, the more surreal it became.
Hallways bent in impossible directions. Whispers clawed at the edges of Haeun's mind—his name spoken in voices he didn't recognize. Memories he never lived tried to bury themselves in his soul.
Then, in the distance—a moan.
The first Echo appeared.
A translucent figure—half-man, half-flame—with no eyes, just a weeping black hole where its face should be. It dragged itself across the floor, leaving trails of screaming wind in its wake.
Caelith froze.
"Don't move. Don't even breathe loud."
It turned toward them.
Too late.
Haeun flared his aura instinctively—and the thing lunged.
The Black Flame Awakens
Caelith moved first—twin blades slicing through the air. But the Echo reformed instantly, latching onto Haeun's chest.
Pain. Soul-deep.
He dropped to his knees—mind fragmenting, memories unraveling. He saw his brother. His sect. Himself dying a hundred different ways.
"No."
"I didn't survive all that… just to fall here."
His core pulsed. The chaotic harmony he forged in the Mortal Realm twisted and surged—and for a moment, his spiritual energy went black. Not corrupted—just untamed. The realm's laws couldn't recognize it.
He exploded outward in a pulse of pure will, his blade igniting with a black flame that devoured the Echo whole.
Caelith stared, eyes wide.
"That… wasn't any technique I've ever seen."
"It wasn't a technique," Haeun breathed."It was mine."
The Relic & The Revelation
At the center of the ruins stood the Vault—a sealed altar wrapped in chains forged from divine lightning. Only one key could open it: spiritual resonance.
Haeun stepped forward, hand bleeding, aura trembling—but he reached in.
The vault opened.
Inside sat a flickering orb—the Relic of Echo Flame—and a scroll sealed in obsidian glass.
But before they could grab it, Caelith pulled her blade and pointed it at Haeun's chest.
"Stop."
"You've seen too much."
"The Court is looking for the Nameless Seed, and this scroll contains their name. I was sent to make sure no one else leaves with it."
Haeun didn't move.
"Then kill me. But you better be fast."
Silence.
Then—she lowered the blade.
"Damn it."
"You're not the Seed. But you've got the same smell."
Backdoor Out
They didn't return through the same gate.
Caelith took him through an underground leyline—one that warped their physical bodies briefly and spit them out miles outside the academy, hidden beneath a temple ruin.
There, she burned the scroll.
But not before glancing at the name.
"...I knew it," she whispered. "I know who it is."
"And they're already inside Dawnforge."
End Scene — The Hooded Watchers Return
Far above, back in the upper reaches of the Divine Court, the hooded watchers stood again before the Hall of Stars.
One flame dimmed.
Another ignited.
"He used the black flame."
"Then he's closer than we thought."
