A dangerous game

Chapter 13 – A Dangerous Game

The next morning, Lin Chaoxi received the name of her "romantic rival": Jiang Zixuan—a rising young actor, famous for his easy charm and flirtatious smile. Coincidentally (or not), he was also cast as her on-screen partner in their upcoming drama.

"System Notice: Mission progress begins now. Make the male lead jealous. Deadline: 24 hours."

She stared at the message and took a deep breath.

She wasn't sure which part of this was worse—being forced to manipulate someone again, or realizing she no longer wanted to.

Still, she had no choice.

On Set – Later That Day

They were filming a modern romance drama, and today's scene required physical closeness. Jiang Zixuan leaned in, brushing her hair back for the take, his smile as effortless as always.

"Is it just me, or are you glowing today?" he teased quietly.

"Must be the lighting," she replied smoothly, keeping her tone light. But she could already feel the weight of someone's gaze.

Across the set, Shen Muyan stood with his arms crossed, watching them. He wasn't smiling.

She turned her head and met his eyes—only for a second—but it was enough.

He was definitely watching.

After the scene, Jiang Zixuan leaned against the wall beside her during break, still playful.

"I heard you and CEO Shen know each other off-screen?"

"We've worked together," she said vaguely.

"Worked together, huh?" He tilted his head, eyes narrowing. "He's been staring at you all day like he's ready to kill someone."

She shrugged. "I wouldn't read too much into it."

But deep down, she was already unsettled. Because the longer she kept playing this game, the less it felt like a mission, and more like a trap.

That Evening – Company Lounge

Chaoxi was gathering her things when the door opened.

Shen Muyan stepped inside. Silent. Cold. But something about him was… charged.

"You and Jiang Zixuan seem close," he said, casually.

Too casually.

"We're co-stars," she replied.

"That's all?" His voice was low. Almost dangerous.

She raised a brow. "Are you… jealous?"

His eyes narrowed, but he didn't deny it.

Instead, he stepped closer. "I don't like being played with, Lin Chaoxi."

Her heart thudded painfully. "Neither do I."

A beat of silence.

Then he asked, quieter, almost bitter, "So what are we? Just another part of your performance?"

She swallowed hard.

System Warning: Host's emotional instability detected. Mission success: 91%. Recommendation: withdraw immediately to avoid affection overflow.

"Shut up," she muttered under her breath, ignoring the system. "Just shut up for once."

Shen Muyan stared at her. "What?"

She looked at him—really looked—and her walls finally cracked.

"I didn't ask for this," she whispered. "I didn't want to fall for you."

That stopped him in his tracks.

For a moment, the air between them froze. Neither of them spoke.

Then he said, quietly but firmly, "But you did."
