“Just Say It Once

Chapter 39: "Just Say It Once"

The hall was blinding under the spotlights, cameras clicking like machine guns. Lin Zhaoxi stood poised on stage, her lips curved into a professional smile, but her hands were ice cold.

Beside her, Shen Muyan looked perfect as ever—immaculate in his suit, calm in demeanor, unreadable in expression.

[System Warning]: Final countdown initiated.

Target: Male lead must publicly express romantic intent.

Time remaining: 3 hours.

The host turned toward the two of them, microphone in hand. "This film isn't just about love on screen," he said, smiling at the audience. "There have been rumors… Mr. Shen, care to comment?"

Zhaoxi's heart pounded. Her eyes flicked to Shen Muyan, praying he would say something—anything.

But he stayed silent.

The audience chuckled nervously. A few reporters stood up, one of them calling out, "Mr. Shen, your chemistry with Miss Lin was remarkable. Many fans are hoping it's real. Could you tell us—do you feel anything for her off screen?"

Zhaoxi froze.

This was it. This was the moment.

He looked at her.

His gaze lingered—not cold, not warm. Just… deep. Searching.

"I don't comment on rumors," he said finally.

The crowd laughed, disappointed. The host tried to recover, moving on to the next question.

[System Alert]: Failure imminent.

Memory reset protocol initializing.

Zhaoxi clenched her fists. She couldn't let it end like this.

Suddenly, she stepped forward and took the microphone. The room went still.

"If I may…" Her voice didn't shake, though her heart did. "I just want to say one thing."

All eyes turned to her.

"I don't care what the script says, or what's real or fake," she said slowly. "But I know how I feel."

Her eyes met his again.

"Even if this is just for show… I still hoped—just once—you'd say something honest."

Shen Muyan's expression didn't change.

But something flickered in his eyes.

He walked toward her, took the mic from her hand—and for one breathless moment, the entire hall held its breath.

Then he leaned in slightly, not touching, but close enough that only she could hear.

"I don't say things I'm not sure of," he murmured. "But you're starting to make me unsure of everything."

He turned back to the audience and said aloud:

"She's unpredictable. Irritating. And constantly tests my limits."

He paused.

"But yes. I like her."

The room erupted.

[System Update]: Mission complete. Memory safe. Emotional connection progressing.

Zhaoxi stood frozen, staring at him.

He didn't look back this time.

He just walked off stage.

Leaving her—and the rest of the world—stunned.
