The Words He Never Said

Chapter 41 – The Words He Never Said

The sky was already dark when Lin Chaoxi finished her final shoot for the day. The production crew slowly dispersed, leaving behind only the quiet hum of distant equipment being packed away.

She stepped out of the dressing room, only to stop in her tracks.

Shen Muyan stood beside his car, arms folded, tie loosened slightly. His gaze was fixed on her—not cold, not indifferent—but heavy, as if burdened with something unspoken.

"You're still here?" she asked, trying to keep her tone neutral.

"I waited," he replied simply. "I wanted to see you."

The system's voice echoed in her mind.

[Alert: Emotional proximity increasing. Recommended action: Retreat.]

She took a breath. "Why?"

Shen Muyan hesitated. That in itself was unusual. For someone like him—precise, calculated, always in control—hesitation was a sign of turbulence.

"I told myself not to get involved again," he said finally, stepping closer. "I told myself you're just a contract, a role. Nothing more."

His words stung, even if she knew they weren't true.

"But every time I see you smile at someone else… every time you act like I don't exist… it drives me insane."

Her heart thudded.

"You think I don't feel anything?" he continued, eyes never leaving hers. "I remember everything. That night five years ago. Your laugh. The way you used to look at me like I was the only person in the world."

"Stop," she whispered. "You don't understand—"

"I do," he cut her off, voice tight. "And I hate it. I hate that I still care."

The system buzzed sharply.

[Warning: Emotional value at 72%. Risk of emotional override imminent.]

[Initiating suppression in 3… 2…]

A splitting pain shot through her skull. She winced, staggering slightly. Shen Muyan moved instantly, catching her arm. "Chaoxi—what's wrong?"

She shook her head, pain flashing in her eyes. "Don't come any closer…"

But he didn't listen.

In one swift move, he pulled her into his arms.

Tightly. Desperately.

"I don't care what happened between us," he murmured into her hair. "But if I lose you again, I'll never forgive myself."

The pain dulled. The system stuttered.

[…Error. Emotional interference too high. Command failed.]

Her breathing hitched. She could feel his heartbeat against her cheek—strong, steady, real.

She should push him away. She should follow the system's command, keep her distance, stay on mission.

But her arms moved on their own, wrapping lightly around him. Just for a moment.

The system jolted.

[Critical Alert: Emotional bond at 74%. Threshold exceeded.]

[Warning: One more breach will result in irreversible punishment—Memory Wipe Protocol.]

She flinched. A whisper of cold terror swept through her.

Not again. Not like last time.

"I… I can't," she said softly, pushing him away with trembling fingers. "I'm sorry. I can't do this."

Shen Muyan's brows furrowed. "Why? What are you so afraid of?"

Her lips parted, but the words refused to come. If she told him the truth—about the system, the world, the mission—would he even believe her?

No. Not yet.

Instead, she offered a pained smile. "Because I know how this ends."

She turned and walked away.

Behind her, Shen Muyan didn't move. He just stood there, hands clenched, watching her disappear into the shadows.

And above all, the system's cold voice echoed one final warning.

[Final Stage Triggered. The next emotional violation will result in immediate disciplinary enforcement.]
