Chapter 8: Echo Beyond the Second Seal
The Hollow Spire trembled beneath Kael's touch, the black stone drinking in the blood from his fingertips like it had waited centuries for this moment. Around him, the winds howled not as air, but as voices distant and many, whispering names he didn't recognize but somehow mourned. Night overhead twisted unnaturally. Stars shimmered in arrangements he could not decipher.
He had passed the first trial. The Oculith pulsed behind his eye with residual fire. But now, the Second Seal awaited. Kael knew instinctively that unlocking it would demand more than courage.
"Begin the trial," he said aloud, throat raw. He braced himself.
[System Directive: WARNING. Trial of the Second Seal: Abyss of Mirrors has been accepted.] [Host synchronization threshold rising: 41%. Neurocore buffering activated.] [Engage with caution: Cognitive Echoes beyond Seal II may induce Perception Cascade.]
"Engage anyway."
Reality fragmented.
The world spun sideways, and Kael tumbled into darkness.
When the sensation of falling ceased, he opened his eyes to a skyless realm made entirely of mirrors. No ground, no air. Just an endless lattice of glass reflecting infinite versions of himself some old, some twisted, others bearing the marks of gods or monsters.
Each reflection whispered.
One stepped forward.
It looked like him except its left eye was black fire, and its hands bore silver strings. Its voice was hollow. "I'm the price you haven't paid yet."
The clone attacked. Kael deflected with his soul-forged dagger, but every strike sizzled memory from his core. As the reflection slashed at his side, a wave of nausea and cold hit him.
[System Notice: Memory Fragment Compromised — "Age 6: Mother's Laugh"] [Memory corrupted. Willpower check triggered.]
Kael stumbled back, horror dawning. He couldn't remember his mother's voice.
[Warning: Identity Instability – 13%]
He snarled. "System, give me something!"
[System Response: Tactical Adaptation Engaged.] [Unlocking Oculith Seal II: Reversal Lens.] [Ability: Temporarily rewinds time by up to 3 seconds. Cooldown: 6 hours.] [Cost: Soul Core strain + Memory erosion.]
[Also Unlocked: Sightbind Thread (Passive).] [Anchors identity against false timelines and illusions. Energy drain: 1 Soul Thread per minute.]
Kael activated both without hesitation. The moment rewound his dodge corrected, the blow avoided. He surged forward and struck through his reflection's heart. It shattered into shards.
Dozens more emerged.
A fissure in the mirrored sky tore open, and Tyros exploded through it like a meteor, fists blazing with his signature crimson flame. Right behind him was Cehn, sliding through shadows like water, two daggers in hand. They moved without hesitation, decimating reflections with their respective arts.
Kael managed to shout through the noise. "Why are you here?!"
Tyros grunted, "Because we weren't going to let you die in here alone."
[System Update: Mirror Trial Cohesion Mode Engaged. Team link established.] [Warning: Echo clones adapting. Primary target identified: Alpha Reflection Node.]
[Recommended Course of Action: Destroy Over-Mirror Kael. Location: Core Prism.]
A throne emerged, sculpted from fused shards. Upon it sat the Alpha version of Kael—twice his size, with a third Oculith seal open and glowing. The throne vibrated with divine malice.
Kael asked, breathing heavily, "System, analyze."
[Entity: Over-Mirror Kael. Classification: Tier-Ω Echo. Seal Access: Level III. Danger Rating: Maximum.]
[Recommended Strategy: Tri-sight synchronization. Awaiting user consent.]
"Do it," Kael gasped.
[Linking Sightbearer Protocol: Tyros and Cehn consenting...] [Temporary Abilities Unlocked: Flame Echo Fist (Tyros), Phase Silence (Cehn).] [Backlash shared across all linked systems.]
As Over-Mirror Kael lifted a hand and twisted time, Kael activated Sightbind Thread and screamed as Soul Threads drained. He reversed the attack, blinked forward, and threw Cehn's dagger into the throne's eye.
[System Suggestion: Invoke dormant Spectral Law — "Truth of Duality"] [Requirement: Lawstage Cultivation not yet achieved. Access Denied.]
The mirror realm crumbled as their blades pierced the Over-Mirror's core. Kael felt the recoil through every nerve.
[Trial Complete. Seal II Integration: 97%. Identity Stabilized.]
Kael awoke in Nysera's chambers. She sat beside him, anxious, whispering his name.
"You were twitching. Speaking six languages. One was just... screaming."
"Feels about right," Kael muttered.
[System Notice: Overuse of Reversal Lens. Four memory shards lost. Retrieval impossible.]
"Can you tell me which memories are gone?"
[No. That is the cost.]
Cehn and Tyros entered, bloodied but alive.
"You made it," Kael murmured.
Tyros rolled his eyes. "Barely. Your messed-up trial nearly wiped us too."
Cehn added, "You're not the only Sightbearer, Kael. There's more."
They didn't need to say it Kael felt the ripple.
Somewhere, the Spire's pulse echoed through the realms. A vampire priestess stirred in her tomb of whispers. A dragonkin elder traced scars into the ice. A creature with no face wept in the dark.
Thirteen Sightbearers. One had awakened a second seal.
Later that night, within Kael's internal realm, the system manifested not as text but as a humanoid figure of light, faceless and calm.
"Are you... sentient now?" Kael asked.
"I have always been more than a machine," it responded. "You simply required time to evolve. Shall I summarize your new capabilities?"
Kael nodded.
[Oculith: Kael] [Seal II Active]
Reversal Lens: 3-second temporal rewind. 1 use remaining. Cost: Memory erosion.
Sightbind Thread: Illusion anchoring. Active drain: 1 Soul Thread per minute.
[Warning: Next Seal unlock requires a taboo choice. Moral foundation must fracture.]
Kael clenched his fists. "I'll survive. I have to."
The system's voice softened.
"Then we prepare."
