"You are in the emergency observation ward," he said gently. "You collapsed at home due to severe abdominal pain and weakness. We have run some urgent scans and blood work."
Her heart began to thud unevenly, a trembling fear seeping through her numbness, "What… what's wrong with me?"
The doctor hesitated, then gestured for the nurse to draw the curtains fully closed around the bed. He pulled a stool closer, sitting down to meet her eye level. His voice dropped to a low, serious tone.
"Mrs Shen, your blood test showed elevated beta-hCG levels, indicating pregnancy. However, your ultrasound confirmed that the embryo has implanted inside your left fallopian tube instead of the uterus."
Yueyao felt her chest tighten painfully. Her fingers clutched at the bedsheet as nausea rolled through her, "What… does that mean…?"
He inhaled quietly, watching her reaction with professional empathy, "This is called an ectopic pregnancy. Unfortunately, such pregnancies cannot progress normally and will eventually rupture the fallopian tube, causing massive internal bleeding. You are already experiencing signs of rupture, your hemoglobin levels are dropping rapidly, and your ultrasound shows internal free fluid consistent with bleeding."
Tears welled up in her eyes, blurring his face, "So… the baby…?" She knew this was all caused by those pills Shen Xiao has been feeding her.
"I'm very sorry," the doctor said softly, "This pregnancy is not viable, and it is life-threatening for you. We need to perform an emergency laparoscopic surgery to remove the embryo and stop the bleeding, otherwise… you could go into hypovolemic shock."
Yueyao felt like her lungs had been punched hollow. A baby… a child she didn't even know she carried… and now she was going to lose it before she could even whisper a greeting to its tiny life.
"Ho..w... H..o..w.... How many weeks?"
"8 weeks..."
The doctor cleared his throat gently, "Mrs Shen, as this is a surgical procedure with anaesthesia, by legal protocol, we will need a family consent signature. Would you like us to contact your husband?"
She shook her head quickly, her tears slipping down onto the crisp white pillow. Her voice trembled as she whispered, "No… don't call him."
"Are you sure?" the doctor asked, surprised, "This is a major decision, and your husband may want to be informed."
She closed her eyes tightly, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks, "I… I will sign the forms myself. Please… don't disturb him." The last thing she needed was a full lecture and burst outs from him.
He observed her for a moment, then nodded solemnly. He gestured to the nurse, who brought over a thin metal clipboard with surgical consent documents attached. She uncapped a black pen and placed it in Yueyao's trembling hand.
"Please read carefully before signing, Mrs Shen. The form explains the anaesthesia risks, surgical risks such as bleeding, infection, damage to nearby organs, as well as the removal of the ectopic pregnancy tissue. You will be under general anaesthesia via endotracheal intubation, and your vitals will be monitored throughout. The procedure usually takes 30-45 minutes unless complications arise."
Yueyao's vision blurred as she stared at the words on the page. Her tears dripped onto the paper, smudging the printed characters slightly.
Her fingers trembled violently, but she forced them to grip the pen tighter. Each stroke of her name felt like hammering nails into a coffin, not just for the tiny life inside her, but for whatever was left of her hope.
Once she finished signing, the nurse quickly checked the form, then placed it back onto the clipboard with quiet efficiency. She gently wiped Yueyao's tears with a tissue before inserting an additional IV line into her right wrist.
