Chapter 29; Did I do something wrong?

Dark, tousled hair fell across his forehead beneath his hood, and shadows clung to his obsidian eyes, making them look endless and unreadable.

His gloved hand cradled the back of her head carefully, as if afraid she would shatter at the slightest touch.

"Stay with me," his low voice rumbled softly against her ear, vibrating through her bones. It was deep, calm, with an undertone of restrained fury that sent a faint shiver through her fading consciousness.

She wanted to ask who he was… why he was helping her… but her lips only parted soundlessly as darkness edged into her vision.

The last thing she felt was the rhythmic rise and fall of his chest beneath her cheek and the soft warmth of his breath as he whispered against her ear,

"You are safe now...."

Then everything faded into black.

Warmth. She felt warmth on her skin, a soft cotton blanket covering her battered body.

The faint scent of antiseptic floated in the air. Her eyelids fluttered open weakly, revealing bright fluorescent lights overhead.

"Where am I?" She hoarsely whispered...

The sterile whiteness burned her eyes, making them sting with tears she could no longer shed.

For a moment, Lin Yueyao lay still, staring blankly at the ceiling. The fragmented memories of darkness, smoke, blood, and lecherous hands clawed through her mind like broken glass.

Goosebumps grew all over her skin feeling disgusted.

'Where… am I…?'

She couldn't even tell where she was but she could recall someone telling her she was safe last night!

It wasn't a dream, right?

A small sob broke the silence and slowly, she turned her head to the side to look at who was making the noise.

Shen Xuan sat curled up in a chair by her bedside, his small face streaked with dried tears.

The moment her dull eyes landed on him, he perked up instantly, his teary gaze brightening with joy.

"Mommy… Mommy, you are awake!" he cried out, stumbling off the chair and clambering onto the edge of the hospital bed.

His little hands reached out to clutch hers, his warm fingers trembling, "Mommy, I was so scared… I thought you were going to leave me… don't play these kinds of jokes again, Auntie Bai said they are not good..."

Yueyao stared at him silently, her mind blank. Then, something in her snapped; it wasn't a dream, her son didn't want her, her son didn't want to save her, and her son wanted her dead!

Disgust surged through her chest like acid. Before he could touch her, she yanked her hand away sharply, her body trembling as she shoved him back with what little strength she had.

Her legs wiggled weakly pushing him out of the bed...

"Don't… touch me!" she choked out, her hoarse voice shaking with hysteria. "Don't touch me… don't… don't come near me…"

Shen Xuan fell back onto the mattress with a small cry, his wide eyes filling with shock and confusion. He got off the bed in a hurry, seeing that his mother didn't want him close.

Tears welled up quickly as he stared at his mother, unable to comprehend the hatred in her eyes. In his mind, she has always been gentle and kind. What happened to her? She has never been this mean to him.

"Mommy… why… why are you angry with me…? Did I… did I do something wrong…? Auntie Bai said it's not good for kids to play those kinds of games..." his small voice cracked with fear and Yueyao didn't know if she should laugh or cry.
