From the corner of her eye, she saw Bai Zhi lounging comfortably on the cream leather sofa, scrolling through her phone with a faint smile. Her hair was tied up in a neat bun, her makeup flawless, her aura peaceful and elegant as if she belonged there more than Yueyao ever did.
"Welcome home, Yueyao," Bai Zhi said softly without looking up. "You should rest early tonight. You look… tired."
Yueyao didn't respond. Her gaze flicked towards the staircase, and without another word, she climbed up slowly, each step making her legs burn with exhaustion.
At the master bedroom door, she paused.
She pushed it open and stepped inside. The familiar scent of sandalwood hit her nose immediately, mixed with the faint musky undertones of Shen Xiao's cologne.
Her stomach lurched violently. This place no longer felt like her matrimonial room, but rather a terrible nightmare.
She covered her mouth with trembling hands as bile rose up her throat feeling like she would vomit.
Everything about this room made her want to retch, the dark mahogany furniture, the cold grey bedsheets, the row of men's suits lined neatly in the wardrobe, all of it suffocated her like a prison she could never escape from.
She backed out of the room as fast as her weak legs would allow, slamming the door shut behind her.
Breathing heavily, she turned and walked to the guest room at the far end of the corridor. She stepped inside and locked the door quietly behind her, sinking onto the small single bed with shaking shoulders.
Yueyao sat in the guest room, staring blankly at the plain white walls. The moonlight filtered in through the thin curtains, casting pale shadows across her battered face.
Her trembling hands rested on her thighs as she tried to calm her racing heart.
She slept in that guest room for the night. She was exhausted and still hadn't recovered yet....

She didn't know how long she had been sleeping, but she finally woke up from a nightmare.
Looking at the wall clock, it was 10 in the morning, she didn't have anything last night and her tummy was rumbling, but she had an important task to complete.
She got out of bed and stood up slowly before she walked out of the guest room and went over to her master bedroom. She walked straight to the small desk in the corner of the bedroom.
This was where she kept her things; her laptop was inside, untouched. She picked it up and placed it on her lap as she sat down in the chair.
She opened her laptop, her fingers shaking as she typed in her password. The blue screen flickered to life, illuminating her tear-streaked cheeks.
She opened her email and searched through her contacts until she found the name she needed to contact. Because of their family loyalty, she knew this man would immediately work on her case whether she paid or not.
Her family lawyer, Mr. Zhao.
With a deep, shaky breath, she began typing out her message:
"Mr. Zhao,
I want to proceed with divorce procedures against Shen Xiao immediately.
I do not want any compensation. I do not want custody battles. I only want my freedom. Please prepare all necessary documents and have them sent to him as soon as possible.
Thank you.
Lin Yueyao."
She read over her words several times before pressing 'send.' Her vision blurred with tears as she watched the message disappear into the digital void.
Almost instantly, her phone, which was just on the desk, buzzed with an incoming call. She picked it up with trembling fingers.
