Chapter 19 – The Ghost’s Hunt

🕯️ Unknown Facility – Outskirts of Verdale City – 2:13 AM

The walls pulsed with the distant hum of machinery. Red emergency lights flashed intermittently, casting long, sinister shadows along the rusted metal corridors. Somewhere beyond the walls, the sound of bootsteps echoed—measured, deliberate, like a predator savoring the hunt.

Specter was here.

Liana crouched behind a toppled server rack, her breaths shallow, her heart pounding like a war drum. Daniel sat beside her, gripping his pistol, eyes scanning every shadow, every flicker of movement.

— "He's close," Daniel whispered, voice barely audible. "Too close."

She nodded, fingers tightening around her silencer. Her mind raced. This wasn't like fighting the Syndicate's soldiers. Specter wasn't a man. He was a phantom. A weapon perfected for one purpose—hunting ghosts like them.

Suddenly—

CLANG.

A metallic thud echoed down the hall. Footsteps. Steady. Heavy. Purposeful.

Daniel cursed under his breath.

— "He's tracking us by sound... heat... movement... everything."

Liana pulled out a jammer from her belt.

— "Then let's give him something to track."

She slid it down the hall. Seconds later—

BEEP—BEEP—BEE—

BOOM.

A burst of EMP shattered lights and sensors in a thirty-meter radius. The hallway plunged into absolute darkness.

— "Move!" she barked.

They bolted, weaving between shattered equipment and metal debris. Behind them, Specter's voice—distorted, mechanical—cut through the silence.

> "You can't hide. You trained me better than that."

Daniel's face turned pale.

— "No... No. That voice..."

— "What?" Liana snapped.

— "Specter... It's not just a codename. Liana... it's—"

CRACK.

A bullet grazed the wall an inch from Daniel's head. Sparks flew.

— "Talk later! Move now!" Liana growled.

They ducked into an access hatch, crawling through narrow ventilation shafts. The walls vibrated with each of Specter's footsteps. Closer. Closer.

Then—silence.

— "Did... did he lose us?" Daniel whispered.

Liana shook her head.

— "No. Worse. He's predicting us."

BANG!

A panel ahead exploded open. A gloved hand shot through, grabbing Daniel by the collar and yanking him out of the shaft.

— "Daniel!" Liana screamed.

Daniel hit the ground hard, rolling just in time to avoid a combat knife slashing for his throat. Specter stepped from the shadows—towering, armored, faceless. His skull-like mask reflected the red emergency lights, giving him an almost demonic appearance.

Specter lunged. Daniel barely parried the knife with his pistol, firing point-blank. The bullet ricocheted harmlessly off Specter's ballistic armor.

— "You can't win," Specter growled. "You trained me for this."

Liana dropped from the vent behind him, landing silently. With surgical precision, she fired—twice into his knee joints. Sparks. But no collapse. Specter spun, elbow slamming into her ribcage. Something cracked. Pain exploded in her side.

Daniel surged forward, ramming Specter with his full weight into a server panel. Wires snapped. Electricity crackled. Specter barely flinched—then headbutted Daniel so hard he hit the ground, dazed.

— "Fight... or die," Specter muttered. "No running."

Liana coughed blood, dragging herself to a nearby console. Her fingers flew across the keyboard. If she couldn't fight him physically, maybe... maybe the environment could.

Warning. Facility Overload. Meltdown Imminent.

T-minus 10 minutes.

Siren blared. The walls vibrated. Specter paused.

— "Reckless," he growled.

— "Yeah," Liana coughed. "Welcome to my world."

Suddenly, the floor beneath Specter collapsed—an old maintenance shaft triggered by Liana's hack. Specter fell, slamming down two stories below.

— "MOVE!" Daniel shouted, grabbing Liana. They limped toward the exit as the countdown blared louder.

9:00... 8:59... 8:58...

Explosions erupted behind them. Fire, smoke, debris. But even as they ran, Liana glanced back—and saw it.

From the broken shaft... a hand emerged. Metal fingers. Unstoppable. Specter... was not done.

🔥 Final Scene – Unknown Location

In a dark surveillance room, a figure watches the chaos unfold on multiple screens. Their face hidden in shadow, fingers tapping together.

A voice behind them asked:

— "Should we deploy the backup unit?"

The figure shook their head.

— "No... Let them bleed. Let them believe they're winning. But activate Protocol Zero."

— "Understood."

A single word flashes across all monitors:

> AWAKENING.
