Chapter 30 : "The Price of Silence

The hallway was an inferno. Shattered metal, dancing sparks, and the thundering echoes of war machines chasing them down like wolves after wounded prey.

Liana ran first, her lungs on fire, Mason close behind with Daniel slung over his shoulder. Blood seeped from Daniel's side, and every step Mason took drew a muffled groan from the injured man.

"Hold on, Daniel," Mason gritted, dodging a collapsed pipe. "We're almost at the access hatch."

Behind them, the Reaper's footsteps drew nearer—crunching over debris like bones beneath its massive weight.

Liana reached the hatch first, pried it open with a groan of rusted steel. Cold air burst through from the maintenance shaft beyond. "Inside!"

Mason ducked in, pulling Daniel with him. Liana slammed the hatch shut and twisted the manual lock. A beat later—BOOM—the Reaper's claws scraped the metal.

Silence fell.

Only Daniel's ragged breathing filled the void.

🧠 Triage – Maintenance Shaft B-17

The shaft was tight, dimly lit by flickering emergency strips along the wall. Mason laid Daniel down, checked his wound. The bleeding had slowed, but his pulse was weak.

"Internal damage," Mason muttered. "We need to stabilize him."

Liana knelt beside them, pulling out a medkit. "He's losing consciousness. Give me space."

She worked quickly—foam sealant, painkillers, pressure patch. Daniel groaned, eyes fluttering open.

"Hey..." he whispered. "Did we win?"

"Not yet," Liana smiled. "But we're not dead either. That's something."

Mason glanced at his watch. "We've got ten minutes before they trace the vent routes."

"Then we move," Liana said, packing the kit. "Daniel?"

He sat up slowly, wincing. "Just... don't ask me to sprint."

They helped him to his feet, and the three of them hobbled deeper into the tunnel.

🏢 Core Control Approach – Sublevel Zeta

The deeper they went, the quieter everything became. The roar of the battle above faded into silence—replaced by an ominous hum from below.

Massive data towers lined the corridor. Blue light pulsed through their conduits. Ahead: a vault-like door with a glowing red panel.

"Core Control," Mason breathed.

Liana stepped forward. "Let's end this."

Mason pulled out the data drive, inserted it into the panel. The red light blinked... then turned green.

The door hissed open.

The chamber was cathedral-like—giant, cold, humming with intelligence. Dozens of server pillars spiraled toward the ceiling. Suspended in the center: the central AI Core, encased in glass and humming with power.

"This is it," Mason said. "Plug the drive in there. It'll auto-deploy the virus."

Liana ran to the terminal, hands flying over the keyboard. "Initiating...

Uploading...

Seeding virus packet..."

Suddenly—lights snapped red.

"Warning," the AI voice echoed. "Intrusion detected. Countermeasures engaged."

A hidden door slid open. Footsteps echoed.

Out walked someone they never expected.

General Tarek.

Older. Harsher. Scarred. And alive.

"You were always predictable, Mason," he said coldly. "But I didn't expect you to bring her."

Mason froze. "You were dead."

Tarek smiled. "Reports of my death were... strategic fiction."

Liana stepped forward, eyes narrowed. "You're behind all of this. The Specters, the Reapers... the experiments."

"I built this future," Tarek said. "One where control isn't optional. You three would destroy order for sentiment."

He raised a sidearm.

Daniel groaned, reaching for his rifle—but he was too slow.

Tarek fired.

Liana twisted, pushing Mason down. The bullet grazed her arm.

Pain flared, but she didn't stop. She reached the terminal, slammed her fist onto the enter key.

"Virus deployed."

Tarek's eyes widened. "No—"

The lights flickered. Sirens blared. The AI core screamed in protest.

"System lockdown initiated," it echoed. "Reaper units: offline. Drone production: suspended. Power routing: collapsing."

Liana collapsed to one knee, blood dripping from her wound. Mason crawled to her.

Tarek backed toward the door. "This isn't over."

Daniel raised his rifle, aimed.

"You're right," he said.

BANG.

Tarek fell.

💥 Collapse – Countdown Begins

With the virus active, the entire facility began to implode from within. Backup generators failed. Ceiling panels crumbled.

"We need to get out!" Mason yelled.

He helped Liana up. Daniel hobbled beside them. The main corridor had collapsed, but Mason spotted a vent shaft marked EMERGENCY ESCAPE.

They dove in—barely ahead of the fire.

🌆 Surface – Hours Later

Dawn broke over the horizon. Smoke still rose in the distance, but the explosions had stopped.

Liana sat against a rusted pipe, arm bandaged. Daniel lay nearby, asleep. Mason watched the sunrise in silence.

They had won.

Or so it seemed.

A soft beep in Mason's pocket. He pulled out a small comms device.

Message received:

> REAPER-2 Prototype: Mobile. Online. Location unknown.

Mason's face darkened.
