Intents had Stages used to determine how proficient you were with them.

For those still in the 1st Rank, knocking on the door to the 2nd Rank, they'd work their way to Conceptualization of the Intent. Then they'd Grasp the fundamentals of the Intent in the Grasping Stage. And finally, after a ton of effort, they'd Manifest their understanding of the Intent in the Manifestation Stage.

After achieving Manifestation of an Intent and giving the go-ahead with your Evolution Path, you'd be able to break through to Rank 2 at any time.
