[⚠️ Suspicious Content] "Sous got a girlfriend, Sous got a girlfriend!" The children sung around here in the spotting grounds in the woods. It was an area where the grass laid flat because of the foot traffic of the orphan children. This was where they met up to talk, to play, to spar, to escape the world in which they lived. Besides for Sous, the children lived in the sewers over on the main road leading to the human community of Red Woods.
"She's not my girlfriend!" Sous argued back. She picked at her clothes, the strands and tears were becoming more prominent now but she hadn't any money to buy new clothes so what was she to do? Nothing.
Kenan came to Sous and placed his arm around her, smiling and shaking his head at the playful jokes the other kids made.
"If she's not your girlfriend then why does she bring you food so much?" One asked.
"What of it?!" Sous snapped back.
They couldn't bicker for long, for there was a rustle in the woods. They turned and placed themselves on high alert, ready in fighting position.
Jacob jumped out of the woods. His skin blistered from the branches that scratched him. Sous glared at him. There was a trail for them to walk on. It was as if he ran straight through the woods.
Sous ran up to him, Kenan right behind her. Although it wasn't said nor appointed, Sous and Kenan were seen as the leaders of the orphan pack even if there was no true leader.
"Jacob, what's the matter?"
Jacob shook his head, obviously distraught. He looked behind his shoulder, his facr flushed. "They're coming for you. They really hard. They have a list with all of your names."
"The wolves." Sous asked.
Jacob nodded.
"We can hide in the sewers. When are they coming?" Kenan asked. He looked back at the other orphan children who were playing what looked like tag.
"They're going to send a scout to try and locate your whereabouts and then an assassin."
Their eyes got wide. It was sinking in that the wolves planned to do to them what they did to their parents.
"We gotta hide!" Kenan began to turn to run to the other children. Sous remained where she was and when Kenan turned to face her, she looked at him. She had to go back to her shack. Her father's bone were there. She needed to bring him with her. Plus her mother, she was still missing. There was a chance she could show up to their shack and wonder where they were. Sous had to write a letter. They didn't know how long they would be in the sewers. "Sous!" Kenan called.
Sous shook her head. "Kenan, we can't stay in the sewers forever. We gotta try for the humans. We're registered with them. They can protect us."
"Whatever you do, do it fast! I gotta get back to the pack."
Before he could run off, Sous called to Jacob. "Thank you," she told him. He smiled at her and left. She turned back to Kenan. She waved to him for him to continue with the other orphans. Picking up her father's bone was her mission then she'd come back, meet up with them then head into town.
The house smelt of baked blueberries.
"Hmm." Doureena said coming down the stairs of her two story home. Being the Alpha meant they lived in a well off house with a big back yard for the kids and even a pool.
She made her way down the stairs, confused because she thought her wife was attending an Omega meeting and her sons were at football and baseball practice.
Kara bent over and opened the oven. She wore the mittens and took the pie out of the oven. She stepped onto a red stool and placed the pie on the counter. With a triumph smile, she took the mittens off.
Doureena laughed lovingly and hugged her daughter in a bear hug.
"Look at you! Who is this for?"
"It's for Sous!"
"Sous?" Doureena leaned over the counter and took a green apple from the fruit bowl. She bit into it, her canines leaving sharp indents. "Is that short for Zhiliary?"
"What-no, Siree."
The Alpha chuckled at being called Siree, the equivalent of papa for female Alphas who sired offspring.
"No?"
"No. She's like-seventeen-like seven years older than me."
Doureena shrugged. "Your mother and I are seven years apart."
"...I guess..." She was no longer interested in the conversation. She wanted to get this pie to Sous promptly.
They were quiet with Doureena looking out the window to the front yard. The garden the Omega had planted was coming in nicely. The yellow and red roses added an elegant serenity to the home; she liked it although it seemed to trigger Derrick's allergies. He was such a sensitive omega.
"How old is Derrick?"
Kara laughed at her sire. "You don't know your son's age? Do you know mine?" Doureena was silent. Kara laughed some more while she placed foil over the pie. "He's twelve and I'm ten."
"Does he like anyone...any Alpha?"
Kara shrugged and pushed out her bottom lip. She wasn't sure. He didn't speak of any Alpha.
"Who is Sous, Kara?"
She didn't answer right away. It was like she was starting to see Sous and the kids were different and they would be judged. That she would be judged.
"She's a kid that lives across the train tracks."
"Hmmf, she's a mutt."
Kara paused her movements. "Do you have to call her that?"
"I mean, that's what she is. What is she? What is she mixed with? Did she tell you?"
"Hmm, she said werewolf, human, pixie or fairy, I think witch, and maybe vampire."
"I don't want you going across the tracks alone. I'll have a friend take you to her."
Kara nodded her head. She wasn't going to argue with her sire so she took the covered pie and waited for the friend to come fetch her while she waited on the front porch.
His name was Deacon and he was a scout. He had been a scout for the past five years and was hoping to get a promotion to be an assassin.
The two of them walked down the main street toward the tracks and once they crossed there was a drastic difference to the environment. Unlike the Apex community which was filled with middle class, upper middle class, and wealthy homes, across the tracks in the mutts territory, it was trailers, broken down shakes, dilapidated apartment buildings. Cars that were missing a wheel or two, stray cats and dogs running around filled with fleas and ticks. It was disgusting. They lived like filth.
Deacon scrunched up his nose, only even coming across the tracks only a few times.
"Do you know where Sous lives?" Deacon asked the ten year old Omega.
"She lives in a little shack and she plays in the woods. You'll see."
"All the little mutts are here?"
"No, just the orphans, I think."
Perfect. Deacon thought but was quickly caught off guard to see Jacob running down the street from coming out of woods. When he saw Deacon, he seemed scared.
"What are you doing over here, Jacob?"
"I-"
"He's friends with them too." Kara blurted out unaware of the situation.
"Oh," Deacon looked at Jacob with a look that nearly made him piss himself. "So then you can show us where your friends hang out then?"
"...umm...yeah..."
They stood in the center of the field. No one was in sight even after Kara called out to Sous a couple of times.
"Where is everyone, Jacob?" Deacon stared at him but Jacob could only manage a shrug. "Tsk, I see." Deacon leaned down and took the pie in his hands. "Kara, baby, how about I take this to Sous? What does she look like?"
His armpits were sweaty, leaving stains on his brown shirt. He listened as Kara described Sous to the scout. Jacob wanted to cry so bad. Deacon wasn't stupid and if he hadn't known any better, he had heard Deacon was up for a promotion. He was fourteen but if they were willing to kill these children then they would surely have no qualms killing him.
"Jacob." Jacob turned to look at Deacon, afraid the scout would put a kanai blade to his throat right then. "Go home and take the Alpha's daughter with you."
By the time Sous had finished packing her father's bones in a bag and wrote the letter for her mother who may come back home, it was sunset. She ran out of her shack toward the sewers near the play area. To not get too anxious, she kept her eyes ahead of her. For her to turn her head to look behind her, could be the end of it. She wasn't strong enough to beat a wolf. Yes, they spar but that was for the school. To get a leg up.
"Ken-" Sous stopped in her tracks. In the field where they played, it was covered-it was covered in blood. Her eyes, she didn't know if they were showing her the reality of it. Body parts: hands, legs, thighs, was that a head in a tree? "Aah!" And in the center of it all, stood a werewolf. Tall, fur all over its body, sharp claws dripped with blood. Its foot stood on top of a child-"KENAN!!!"
The werewolf turned to look at her-
"Chtsk!" She turned but slammed into a man with a blueberry pie in his hands.
"Hello, Sous..." He knelt down to the height of Sous to smile in her face, his canines white. "Kara wanted me to give this to you." He held the blueberry pie out for her. Beginning to laugh a wicked laugh, bringing tears to the young girl's eyes.
