POV: Ember
The needle went into my arm before I could change my mind.
"Wait!" Ash grabbed my other hand. "Ember, please think about this. You could die."
I watched my blood flow through the clear tube into the bag. Each drop looked darker than normal, almost glowing. "He's already dying because of me. I won't let that happen."
The doctor checked his watch. "We need to move fast. His organs are starting to shut down."
My babies were crying in their carriers next to the bed. Every time they made a sound, pain shot through my chest like someone was squeezing my heart. But not the normal kind of pain from giving birth. This was different. Deeper.
"Something's wrong," I whispered.
"What do you mean?" the doctor asked, checking the blood bag.
"I can feel him getting weaker. Like part of me is disappearing." I touched my chest where the pain was getting worse. "Is that normal?"
