Chapter 9

James was lucky; the scissors had missed his vital organs by two inches.

Although he didn't die, on the day he was discharged from the hospital, he was met with a media firestorm and a widespread public outcry online.

It all started on the day I was crushed by the cedar tree. An eyewitness at the scene had filmed the entire incident and posted it online, including records of dozens of 911 calls and details of my relationship with James.

Meticulous internet sleuths even dug up the fact that on the day of my accident, James had refused to respond to the call to rescue me. Instead, he was with his ex-girlfriend, who was faking a suicide attempt.

And that bottle of pills was later confirmed to be nothing but vitamins.

Rebecca's bipolar disorder was a lie, but she had been pretending for so long, frequently staging suicides to keep James's affection, that she eventually started to believe her own act. After she was committed, she was diagnosed with delusional disorder.
