Liss found the Clockmaker waiting in her garden.
"You're the one who stitched the seams of reality," Liss said.
"Yes," the Clockmaker replied.
"And you keep pulling the thread."
They walked through the orchard.
The Clockmaker gestured to the sky.
"That crack? You did that when you forgave a god."
Liss frowned.
"Would you rather I killed them?"
"I'd rather you chose less."
"I won't."
The Clockmaker sighed. Then smiled.
"Good. I came to test you. You passed."
She handed Liss a watch.
"When the final silence comes, use this.
