My Mom's Life or My Own?

The video call rang for forty seconds before disconnecting. That was strange. Mom never ignored his calls.

A voice chat request appeared seconds later.

"Sweetie, why were you drinking last night?" Her voice trembled a little.

"Just hanging with friends," Ethan replied. "Why did you reject the video?"

"Bad lighting here!" She sounded too quick; her tone was too bright.

"I'm coming home for Qingming break."

He heard a sharp breath. "That's such a long trip! Stay on campus—I'll send extra money!"

Red flag.

"What's wrong? Tell me."

"Nothing! Everything's—"

CLANG! Something metal crashed in the background.

"—gotta go! Money's on the way!" Click.

Ethan's thumb grazed the [Terminus Shard]. John's skills…

This was the third call to Wang Zi Chen that morning.

"Changed your mind?" Wang yawned.

"Is John there?"

"We don't live together—"

"I'm here," John interrupted.

Wang let out an angry scream.

"John. Investigate my family. Now."

Thirty seconds of keyboard tapping later:

"Your mother was diagnosed with leukemia two days ago. She is in the hospital now. Your father is with her."

Silence.

The world tilted.

Leukemia. An incurable shadow.

"I'm going home."

"Flight booked. 2:30 PM." John's efficiency was harsh. "Eat first."

"Can... players cure this?" Ethan asked quietly.

"Modern science? No." John paused. "But an A-grade healer? 3-5 points. S-grade? 8-15."

Points he couldn't use unless he stayed in the game. Staying meant risking permanent death.

Ethan sat by the university lake and watched ducks paddle in aimless circles.

Join the death game to save Mom?

Or stay "safe" and watch her die?

DING!

A text from "John" arrived—a photo.

A hospital room with pale sheets.

His mother looked frail, like cracked porcelain.

His father sat by her, his eyes empty.

Post-surgery. Stable. No immediate danger. - John

Then Ray's call came in.

"Ethan! John told me! Listen—"

"Healers can fix leukemia. But only if you're registered with the Apocalypse Bureau."

Hope flared—until:

"No registration means no free healer." Ray's voice became serious. "And if you quit the game…"
