Lin Yiwan's body hit the ground first, filled with bullets.
Ethan's future self, still stuck in the death replay, could only watch as John, Sparky, Mu Nan, and Wang Zi Chen fell around him. Only Murong Xiner remained upright, her barrier flickering under the barrage of gunfire.
Her eyes were wide, filled with confusion.
Seven paces out, guns are fast. Seven paces in, guns are unstoppable.
One of the locals in black shouted orders in Pijin, and suddenly, every gun turned toward Murong.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Bullets sparked against her shield, jolting her out of her stupor. Then, rage took over.
Murong's hands flew out. Invisible blades of wind sliced through the attackers.
Men screamed as their skin tore open like overripe fruit.
Still, Murong wasn't done. She hacked at their bodies, her breaths coming in ragged, furious gasps.
"Enough."
Ethan's future self grabbed her shoulder.
Murong spun around, and for the first time, relief flashed in her eyes.
"You're alive?!"
Of everyone, he was the one who couldn't afford to die. No respawns—no second chances.
"Wang took the bullets for me." Ethan's voice sounded hollow as he glanced at his friend's lifeless body.
Murong swayed, her face pale. "Thank god you're—"
Then her legs gave way.
Ethan caught her just as she fainted. She had overused her abilities and was completely drained.
Back in the cave, present-day Ethan breathed sharply as the death replay faded.
Outside, the fog thickened, swirling like a living creature.
20:23. Seven minutes until the earthquake.
Murong still hadn't woken up.
Ethan considered his options:
Flee now. Follow John's escape routes. Survive ten days at sea.
Stay. Face whatever was hiding in the mist.
Then—
[System Alert]
» LOCATION LOCKED: APOCALYPSE ORIGIN DETECTED.
» FINAL PHASE ACTIVATES IN 10 MINUTES.
CHOOSE:
LEAVE. (Guaranteed survival. Cannot end the Apocalypse.)
STAY. (Chance to end the Apocalypse. Gain: [Curse of the Abyss].)
[Curse of the Abyss]
Death in-game = 10x Resurrection Coins to revive IRL.
Ethan almost laughed. This wasn't very sensible to him. He chose Option 2 without hesitation.
[Reward: Coin of Judgment]
A single gamble with Death.
If used, all resurrection privileges are void.
The coin appeared in his hand—a haloed angel on one side, a demon wielding a trident on the other.
What does this do?
Before he could think more about it, the fog turned into a suffocating wall. Visibility shrank to less than five meters. Then three. Then—
"Phase Two initiated. Zone locked."
The mist became liquid, swallowing light, sound, and even the air. Ethan held his hand inches from his face and saw nothing.
Then—
CRUNCH.
Something massive shifted outside the cave.
Not the leviathans.
Something worse.
