Chapter 15: A Shadow in the Ember
The sky over Emberlight glowed a dull violet as dawn struggled to pierce the heavy mist blanketing the forest. Birds did not sing, and the usual morning stirrings of wildlife were absent. A deep, expectant stillness clung to every leaf and branch, as if the earth itself held its breath.
Kael awoke with a sharp intake of breath, the vision from the night before still burning behind his eyes. Selene lay not far from him, curled beneath her cloak, her expression peaceful yet tense—like even in slumber, she was listening.
He stood slowly, his bare feet cool against the mossy stones of Whisperwatch. The relics, now fused into one glowing disc, floated a few inches above a slab of stone nearby, spinning slowly. The silver and crimson runes shimmered as if alive, pulsing like a heartbeat.
Selene stirred. Her eyes fluttered open, locking onto the relic.
"It hasn't stopped glowing," she murmured.
Kael nodded. "It's like it's waiting."
"For what?"
Before Kael could respond, a low rumble echoed from beneath their feet. The earth vibrated subtly, and from the edge of the glade, a pulse of dark energy rippled outward, curling like black smoke through the grass.
Selene stood at once, the flame in her palm leaping to life. "Something's coming."
A figure emerged from the fog—a tall, hooded form cloaked in layers of shadows that writhed like serpents. Its face was obscured, but two eyes burned like coals beneath the hood. It moved with a slow, deliberate grace, as though time bent around it.
Kael stepped in front of Selene instinctively. "Who are you?"
The figure didn't answer with words. Instead, it raised a skeletal hand wrapped in scorched cloth and pointed to the fused relic.
"It is not ready," the creature rasped. "The bond is incomplete. Your blood has not been given."
Selene's flame hissed in her palm. "What do you mean?"
"Fire and fang must bleed as one," it said. "Or the gate shall not hold."
"What gate?" Kael demanded, his voice hard.
The entity turned its burning gaze on him. "The one your ancestors sealed in blood and ash. Beneath the mountain. Beneath your pride. And it stirs."
A gust of wind blew the fog aside, revealing dozens of lesser shadows lurking at the glade's edge. They crouched like hounds, their eyes glinting red. The ground beneath Kael cracked slightly. Roots pulled away, revealing old runes carved in the earth itself.
Selene stepped forward. "If the bond needs blood… then take mine."
Kael's head snapped toward her. "No."
Her eyes met his—resolute, calm. "If this is the price to seal it, I'll pay it."
But the creature shook its head. "It cannot be taken. It must be given… in trust. In unity."
Kael understood. Slowly, he took Selene's hand, pulling a dagger from his belt. Without hesitation, he sliced a shallow line across his palm. Selene did the same. Their blood mingled as their hands clasped tightly.
The relic responded instantly.
Light exploded outward, silencing the shadows with a wave of blinding silver. The creature hissed and recoiled, its form unraveling like smoke in the wind.
The runes beneath their feet flared, and a deep boom echoed from within the earth.
The gate was still closed—but it had awakened.
They stood together, hands still clasped, the relic now hovering between them, calm and dim. The danger had passed for now, but a deeper truth had settled between them.
This bond—this prophecy—it was not only about them. It was about what they could awaken… and what they must stop.
"We'll need help," Selene whispered. "This is bigger than our clans."
Kael nodded. "Then we gather them. Witches and wolves. Rebels and outcasts. If the gate opens… we all burn."
She looked down at the relic, then back up at him. "Do you think they'll believe us?"
Kael's gaze hardened. "They'll have to. Or they'll die ignorant."
Selene traced the crescent mark on her brow which also emerged newly, now brighter than ever. "The vision we saw… the war… I think it was more than a glimpse. It was a warning. Or maybe… a destiny."
He turned toward the east where the fog thinned. "Then we write our fate. Together."
A distant howl broke the quiet, long and mournful.
Kael stiffened. "That wasn't one of ours."
Selene's grip tightened. "We're being watched."
Above them, in the canopy, unseen eyes blinked in unison, vanishing before they could look.
Something had awoken with the gate.
And it most definitely wasn't alone.
