MAKE THEM PAY

DETECTIVE KENT'S POV

I'm not a difficult man. Well at least I don't think I am, but when I spot a lie, I know it. Liam Mathews, a very popular lawyer came by my office the other day and dumped a bunch of evidence in front of me. Evidence from something that I have wanted to get my hands on for years.

The case on the organization erotica has been eating away at my soul for years but I haven't had the full power of the case since my director decided to close the case some years back because we didn't have enough evidence. I've always thought the director was full of shit and it wouldn't come as a surprise to me if I found out he was covering up for this organization.

I know with the proof I have now, he'll have no choice but to open the case back up. That I am confident about. My absolute and real problem right now is Liam Mathews. He's hiding something and I know it. His story was full of shit and I saw it in his eyes. I have no doubt that what he told me about his friends being kidnapped was true but he knows more than what he's letting on.

I guess I'll find out with time but what's more important right now, is that I work on this case and bring those girls back home. With a confident look on my face, I walk into my director's office with the evidence in hand.

"Kent..." The middle-aged man says as I walk into his office. "What's this about a new lead?" He asks me with a raise of his brow. I can see the doubt and irritation on his face. He doesn't want me working on this case and it shows.

"It's about erotica sir." I say and drop the documents in front of him. "I received these anonymously. The case is back open sir." I say courageously. he takes the documents and scan through them. I observe him carefully as he looks at them and his face betrays all the emotions he's trying so hard to keep hidden. For a split second, I see a hint of fear wash over his features.

I'm hundred percent sure that he's mixed up with erotica somehow. I've always got a bad vibe from him but I've just never had enough evidence. When he closed up a case as important as this one a few years ago, something immediately felt off to me and now, I have the chance to prove it.

I know I shouldn't have shown this evidence to him but I need all the resources I can get to work on this mission and only him can authorize that I get full access to a team and all the gadgets I would need.

"I see." He says in a deep and defeated voice. His ego is hurt. He'll have to admit to the board that he was wrong for closing the case years ago but I don't really give a shit how he feels. All I need is the go ahead that he is forced to give me so I can start with the case.

"This is some solid stuff, Kent." He says.

"You have to open the case back up, sir." I say more in a commanding voice and he raises his brow at me. I stand my ground because he doesn't have a choice and he knows it.

"You're really persistent about this case." He says. "You're finally going to get what you want. I hope it'll be worth it in the end."

I don't know about him but that pretty much sounded like a threat to me.

"Oh it will be worth it sir." I say with a smirk on my face. "Please authorize my taking over this case, and I would like the liberty of choosing the members of my team myself."

"You're pushing it Kent." He says deeply.

"I have the right. I found the evidence." I state. He stays quiet for a moment before smiling and rising from his chair.

"Okay, Kent. Do what you want. Choose your team and you can have access to whatever you would want concerning the case. This evidence looks solid and valid, but I find out that anything is off with this case. If I find out that you are not making progress and wasting FBI resources, I will not hesitate to shut the case down again." He says glaring at me straight into the eyes.

"Sounds like you have a personal problem with this case, sir. As important as it is, it seems a bit weird that you are so eager to shut it down every time I bring it up." My words come out clear and concise, the meaning behind them clear to both him and I.

"Are you insinuating anything, Kent?" He asks, his voice getting harder with every word.

"Just want to understand what your problem is, sir." I say.

"I do not have a problem. All I care about is the fact that we should not exercise ourselves on something that might not produce results when we could be focusing on more important things." He insists.

"More important than a sex trafficking organization? This is the biggest case we've had. The hugest lead in a long time. This case should be the FBI's top priority and I plan to personally make it mine."

"Do whatever makes you happy Kent. I just hope this doesn't all blow up in your face. It would be very embarrassing to have me open this case back up just for me to close it again."

He's not being direct but it's very clear that he's threatening me. I don't have proof but I'm sure I'll find some soon. My director is linked to this case and he's doing a terrible job hiding it. I'll prove that he is complicit in this no matter how hard he tries to make this case difficult for me.

I know there will be some bumps along the road, bumps that he might create for me. But erotica has to fall by all means. This organization that has hurt and ruined so many people's lives. I will make it my job to watch it crumble to the ground and I will send the director falling down right with it.

I will make sure I find everyone who is involved and make them pay. But first, I need to know what Liam is hiding and no one has to find out about it but me. So, I'll have to personally follow Liam around until I find out what he was holding back from telling me.
