The Pokémon Battle Center.
The crowd filled the stands, and as always, Diancie stood in as the official referee.
These days, the battle center drew massive audiences. Not just Awakened Trainers, but even ordinary citizens—those without any special powers—had become deeply captivated by Pokémon battles.
Su Bai's Pokémon Center was swiftly reshaping life in Haicheng.
Even though the average citizen might never become Awakened, there was still hope in becoming a Trainer. Many families had started saving with the dream of buying a Pokémon of their own.
Because of this, the daily foot traffic at the center kept growing. If it weren't for the center's automated systems—and the Rotom operating behind the scenes like a cheat-level assistant—Su Bai would've been run ragged by now.
The main battle arena, only used for special matchups, was usually reserved for the veteran regulars.
Most new Trainers weren't yet skilled enough to warrant such a stage—ordinary arenas were enough for their duels.
So every time the large battlefield opened up, spectators swarmed in droves. Even ongoing battles would pause as Trainers rushed to witness the veterans in action.
Among those veterans, Ding Yue had quickly become the brightest star ever since her breakout performance.
"Stepping into the arena first, we have Ding Yue—accompanied by her Pokémon: Fletchinder and Nidoran!"
Diancie's sweet voice rang out, met by roaring applause from the audience.
Ding Yue raised a proud hand, basking in the cheers.
Not even during ranked matches had she experienced such a rush.
Pokémon battles weren't just bringing hope to humanity—they were also injecting light and laughter into a world shadowed by threats from the Beast of Death.
Bit by bit, these battles were reshaping Haicheng's culture and community.
"And now, her challenger: Li Xiaoyu, along with her two Eevee!"
Li Xiaoyu entered the arena with two adorable Eevee at her side, instantly sparking waves of confused chatter among the spectators.
How could those tiny furballs possibly stand up to the majestic, powerful Fletchinder?
"Wait just a moment," Li Xiaoyu said with a sly smile. "I need to swap out my team."
She recalled the two base-form Eevee, and with a flourish, threw two new Poké Balls.
Zap! Flash!
Two evolved forms took shape—Jolteon and Umbreon, standing proud and radiant in the center of the battlefield.
"No way—she evolved both of her Eevee? And bought two more?"
In the front row, Wang Tao's brain kicked into overdrive. He instantly pieced the whole puzzle together.
"So that's why she dared challenge Ding Yue!"
Liu Yunlan rubbed her head and shot a look at Wang Tao.
"Why does this feel awfully familiar?"
Su Bai chuckled.
"You all used to say her team was too plain."
"Now, you're about to experience the full potential of Eevee, one of the most unique and beloved Pokémon around."
Even rivaling Pikachu in popularity, Eevee wasn't just about looks.
Because Eevee's evolution paths were so complex, Li Xiaoyu had often been overlooked by the others—despite being just as talented.
Sure, Zhang Qun's Goomy and Gible were hard to evolve too, but those were pseudo-legendaries. Everyone just assumed they'd shine eventually.
Eevee didn't get the same respect.
But today, all that was about to change.
This would be Li Xiaoyu's moment to prove herself.
Inside the arena, Ding Yue was clearly startled to see the evolved duo.
Still, her hard-won confidence in her Fletchinder kept her steady.
"Today's battle will be a Double Battle, as agreed by both sides!"
Diancie's voice rang across the field.
"Li Xiaoyu will be using Jolteon and Umbreon, while Ding Yue sends out Nidoran and Fletchinder!"
"Let the match… begin!"
Ding Yue made the first move!
With a sharp cry, Fletchinder soared into the air.
A blazing Ember began to descend from above, while on the ground, Nidoran summoned a few gleaming Poison Stingers atop its head and launched them toward Umbreon!
Ding Yue hadn't neglected her Nidoran's training—she always made sure both her Pokémon grew stronger together.
A high-low combo attack—cleverly done.
But Li Xiaoyu remained calm and composed.
It was her first time battling with Jolteon and Umbreon, but she had practiced countless mental simulations of this exact scenario.
Her "mock opponent" had always been Ding Yue's Fletchinder + Nidoran combo—the undefeated force in the center lately.
"Umbreon—use Quick Attack to intercept the attack!"
"Jolteon—use Thunder Wave!"
At her command, Umbreon vanished from her position, zipping across the battlefield.
She reappeared right in the path of the falling Ember!
The fiery sparks landed squarely on her back, causing some damage—but thanks to Umbreon's exceptional defense, it wasn't serious.
The Poison Stingers followed a moment later, but Nidoran's basic-level power didn't faze her at all.
Umbreon withstood both attacks without breaking a sweat.
Su Bai's eyes lit up.
"Nice!"
It was an unexpected yet brilliant counter-strategy.
Quick Attack was a priority move, giving Umbreon an edge despite her lower speed.
But instead of attacking Nidoran—an obvious choice—Li Xiaoyu aimed for something greater.
Knowing Umbreon couldn't reach the airborne Fletchinder directly, she instead used her bulk to shield Jolteon from the incoming Ember.
A move born of tactical genius.
Umbreon had just tanked a combo for the sake of a better counterattack.
And now, it was Jolteon's turn to shine.
Zzzzt!
Sparks crackled as Jolteon unleashed Thunder Wave—a net of electricity enveloped Nidoran just after its attack.
Nidoran shuddered, its limbs locking up.
Paralysis.
It couldn't move.
Ding Yue felt a jolt of panic. This wasn't going to be easy.
Still, Fletchinder continued raining down embers from above under her sharp commands.
Thanks to her intense training regimen, her Fletchinder had grown fast—even faster than Jolteon in the current matchup.
In mere moments, three balls of fire were launched in a tight triangle formation—converging on Jolteon!
"Umbreon—block those embers!"
"Jolteon—use Thunder Shock!"
Li Xiaoyu remained steady and unfazed.
Jolteon's fur stood on end like jagged needles. Sparks of lightning surged across its entire body—energy crackling and ready to explode!
At the same time, Umbreon leapt into the path of all three fireballs.
