Chapter 75: The Patience Game

[Chapter 75: The Patience Game]

The film and entertainment industry was a different kind of arena compared to politics; it was another crossroads where fame and fortune met. The more the public's eye was on these industries, the easier it was for those involved to get lost in it.

Without delving into politics, the center of the storm in entertainment often revolved around the stars appearing in front of the cameras -- athletes, movie and TV stars, singers, hosts, comedians, and the like. They generally bore immense pressure from rumors and gossip. Of course, at the same time, they also enjoyed the vast glory and honor brought by career success.

When surrounded by countless fans, hearing their heartfelt cheers, it was hard not to feel stirred inside.

In recent years, directors behind the scenes also began to enjoy the public-facing glory. Relatively speaking, producers and the real bosses behind the scenes mostly derived their satisfaction from the substantial cash flow coming in.

Sometimes, a few unscrupulous big shots would use their power to toy with the glamorous stars on stage to satisfy their darker desires.

Charlie rarely sought validation by heavy-handed or rude means through any actor. More often, he enjoyed building assets step by step, grasping power gradually!

So, even though Charlie had been walking a tightrope, pushing the growth of Corleone Studios a bit too fast, the growing sense of control continuously satisfied his desires. This feeling made him utterly intoxicated.

If a producer was someone who coordinated directors, cameramen, and actors to create a movie, then Charlie was a producer in real life, orchestrating human and material resources to build his own kingdom!

Unfortunately, countless dull and tedious tasks came with the building process.

Fortunately, Charlie could endure the bureaucratic company management and, relying on experience from the previous life, he could methodically handle every detail.

Besides, after work, he could date beautiful women and enjoy the sweetness of love.

Following Mord's earlier tip, Charlie had, in the name of Corleone Studios, purchased three identical Mercedes cars, including one for himself, to serve as company vehicles.

With royalties from his book, he bought a Grand Cherokee to drive alone after work to Los Angeles International Airport.

Vera was at the American Music Academy Theater in San Francisco.

They had been communicating daily by phone these past days. After rehearsal ended, Vera had a short break.

...

Charlie, a burly man, felt much more comfortable driving a big car even though he wasn't particularly concerned with its looks.

As night fell, he sped along the 405 freeway. The bustling, colorful city lights quickly faded behind him.

After an hour on the Glen Anderson freeway loop, he finally arrived at his destination.

He was supposed to drop her off at Burbank Airport but came to eat airport restaurant food just because he had nothing better to do.

Charlie parked in the P1 lot then wandered into a gift shop, casually picking a bouquet of roses and a book about acting.

He didn't seem truly immersed in romance; instead, it felt like a game they were playing.

He was already impatient, silently complaining in his mind.

However, Vera, frustrated after several tough days at work, really leaned on Charlie.

A strong, interesting man who appeared during her lowest moments to encourage her left a lasting impression -- vulnerable people easily become dependent.

Vera missed Charlie dearly; the tougher work was, the stronger her feelings grew.

As she grabbed her luggage and hurried, she saw Charlie dressed sharply in a suit, holding flowers with a smile, filling her with joy.

"Hi, Charlie!"

Vera wore a sapphire-blue pantsuit, purple heels, and a sky-blue lightweight knit sweater. She happily ran over and threw herself into Charlie's arms.

Charlie wondered silently if she was risking twisting an ankle running so fast but smiled and gave her a big hug.

"Oh, Vera, welcome back. You've been on my mind all these days."

"Me too!" Vera couldn't help but respond emotionally, encouraged by her self-proclaimed soulmate.

The two lovebirds linked arms, chatting warmly as they walked toward the terminal.

Even seated in the car, Vera, looking a little silly, said she loved the flowers and the book Charlie gave her.

"I've been thinking about enrolling in an acting school. I'm a bit worried because you know stage acting differs from film acting. You just happened to give me a book about acting. Charlie, you're so thoughtful."

"Oh, thanks. I'm glad you like it," Charlie said without any embarrassment, starting the car smoothly.

...

About ten minutes later, they arrived at a Mexican restaurant and sat down.

Vera was moved again, saying Charlie's date spot choice was great.

After consulting Vera, he casually ordered two combo meals and a bottle of Bien Nacido wine.

Charlie, ever the gentleman -- or perhaps stealing from the waiter's duties -- laid out napkins for Vera. "Has rehearsal been going well? Want to skip and come to Las Vegas with me? I have two important banquets to attend and would love some female company!"

Vera took a sip, looking a bit distracted. "It's okay. I'm used to the strange looks from colleagues. The producer of Chicago, Martin Richards, came recently to guide rehearsals. The old guy's a real grouch, loves to bark orders to show his power. I'm thinking about taking leave since my role isn't major. But can I know more about these events? Am I appropriate to attend?"

Chicago?

Charlie's mind was clear today. After a short pause, he smiled, "Nothing inappropriate. One is a meeting between distributors and theaters; the other is a charity gala. Honestly, I'm mostly going just to mingle. Vera, I hope you'll do me this favor and accompany me."

Though it was clearly a gesture of goodwill, Charlie, the seasoned operator, invited it in a way that made Vera feel needed and respected.

Sure enough, Vera was delighted and nodded happily, "I'd love to!"

Soon, their food arrived one by one.

While eating, he casually asked about the Chicago musical, such as copyright ownership and specifics.

He memorized details and discussed theater, movies, and their careers with Vera.

Smoothly steering the conversation, he kept their mood warm and cozy.

...

After dinner, Charlie suggested shopping for evening gowns and jewelry to prepare for the gala.

His constant encouragement and enthusiasm made it impossible for Vera to refuse.

By eleven p.m., Charlie dropped Vera at a pre-booked Hilton Hotel on Century West Road then left alone.

To a person with independent thoughts, Charlie's attitude had grown more serious.

At least Vera was deeply moved, believing this young, successful man truly intended a lifelong romance with her.

...

A few days later, in Las Vegas at the Bally's Hotel, Charlie checked in with Vera and then met up with Pierza, Patrick Whitesell, and others in the lobby.
