Chapter 12: Mist, Traitors, and the First Step

The Thousand Mist Mountains were no place for the hesitant.

Just hours into the northeastern route, the team was already swallowed by a thick, unnatural fog. The trees loomed tall, roots twisting like claws across the forest floor. An owl's cry echoed through the mist, but no creature could be seen.

Team 7 moved cautiously in a V-shaped formation. Jin Seo-Won led at the front, his expression unreadable. Beside him, Do-Yoon clutched a spiritual map handed out by the Academy.

> "The first target… an ancient spirit altar," Do-Yoon muttered.

"But the energy readings keep shifting."

Soo-Ran, positioned in the center, glanced around nervously.

> "This place feels… alive. The mist isn't natural."

Seo-Won nodded.

> "You're right. This is no ordinary fog. It's an illusion barrier."

"It's testing our minds… and patience."

Ji-Hye swallowed hard.

> "If we get lost… will we die here?"

> "Yes," Seo-Won said bluntly.

"That's why you follow orders. No improvisation."

---

Moments later, one of the outer clan boys, Jang-Mok, began to slow.

> "Sorry… my ankle twisted. I just need a minute…"

Seo-Won stopped. His eyes narrowed.

> "You're our vanguard. If you slow down, we're exposed. Stand up."

Before Jang-Mok could respond, two figures burst out from the mist, launching simultaneous attacks—straight at Seo-Won!

Coordinated ambush. Blades laced with poison.

Do-Yoon shouted, "Ambush!!"

Seo-Won didn't retreat. He moved like water—slipping between strikes and catching one attacker's wrist mid-swing.

> "Two of them… from within my team."

> "Traitors," he muttered coldly.

He twisted the attacker's arm violently—a loud snap echoed as the shoulder dislocated.

The second tried to flee, but Do-Yoon, shaking with fear yet unwavering, lunged and slashed the back of his leg, bringing him to his knees.

> "For the Fourth Prince!!"

---

The rest of the team stood frozen.

Two traitors—at the very start of the mission.

Seo-Won loomed over them, expression like stone.

> "Who sent you?"

"Jin Seo-Gi?"

"Or are you just that stupid?"

Both tried to bite their tongues, to kill themselves, but Seo-Won struck pressure points on their necks before they could finish.

> "Do-Yoon, bind them."

"Soo-Ran, check Ji-Hye's arm."

"Jang-Mok…" — his eyes locked on the boy —

"Lag behind one more time, and I'll leave you here."

Jang-Mok stood immediately, legs trembling.

> "Y-Yes, Prince…"

---

Soo-Ran stepped closer to Seo-Won.

> "We could've lost someone just now. If it weren't for you…"

Seo-Won stared into the mist, now growing thicker.

> "This mission isn't about beasts."

"It's about who's willing to step over allies for the throne."

> "And I won't hesitate… to crush anyone who tries to step over me."
