The masked figure stood motionless.
The ears sewn into his mask twitched with subtle vibrations, though there was no sound in the chamber. Not really.
Elion felt the Spiral on his palm pulse like a drum — not in warning, but recognition.
He didn't speak.
He waited.
The figure finally broke the stillness.
— You are a Listener still. But only barely.
The voice was quiet. Hoarse. As if dragged across years.
Seren stepped beside Elion.
— He was the first of us to ascend.
— Ascend?
The masked man nodded.
— There are Paths. Not all Spirals are the same. Each Sequence leads in a different direction. Some gain sight beyond time. Others, speech that binds reality. Some… vanish entirely.
He raised a hand. Pulled down the glove.
His skin was carved with hundreds of tiny spirals, moving like ink under glass.
— I took the Path of Hollow Sound.
Seren walked to a shelf and removed a book wrapped in string and silence.
— There are Nine. Each a lie. Each a truth.
She opened the book to a worn page.
Elion stepped closer.
On the page were nine names, written in different ink — some faded, others etched in blood:
1. The Listener
2. The Speaker
3. The Mouth Without Echo
4. The Eye That Sleeps
5. The Finger That Opens
6. The Breath That Fades
7. The Mirror That Devours
8. The Name That Forgets
9. The Flame Beneath Silence
Seren touched the first entry.
— You are on the first path.
— The Listener hears what others ignore.
— But if you go further… you lose the right to silence.
Elion's voice shook.
— What happens if I stop?
The masked man's fingers tightened.
— Then you remain half-open. The Echo will rot you from within.
Seren nodded.
— Every Spiral must complete a path.
— Or die from hearing the one they never chose.
She handed Elion a vial — glass, sealed in wax. Inside: thick black water that moved without being touched.
— Drink this, and you will hear which path calls you most.
Elion held the vial, uncertain.
— You said you were survivors.
— Survivors of what?
Seren looked away.
The masked figure answered instead.
— Of those who chose wrong.
Silence fell over the chamber.
But not empty silence.
Heavy.
Watching.
Waiting.
And for the first time since it all began… Elion realized:
The Spiral doesn't choose paths.
It tempts you to choose the wrong one.
