CHAPTER 32
Inside Vlad's mind…
His steps were heavy. Blood was everywhere, staining the world in crimson as he moved through it. The air was thick with the sharp scent of iron, burning his throat with every breath. All around him lay fragments of the past destruction, loss, and wounds that had never healed.
He stopped at one point. Before his eyes, a memory surfaced one from his childhood.
I thought I'd moved past this… he sighed inwardly, but kept walking.
Then… he reached his greatest pain.
The moment his father was killed.
The smell of blood grew heavier. His eyes locked onto the killer's face.
And he saw it.
The Fifth Carrier.
At that exact moment, a deep tremor rippled through Mike's mind. Inside the darkness of the mask, something was stirring. The Fifth Carrier was pushing, trying to break free from its chains.
Mike's vision blurred. The control over his claws began to slip, his hands involuntarily pushing deeper.
Vlad was suddenly ripped away from the scene.
In an instant, he found himself in a blinding white void.
No blood. No tragedy. Nothing.
Just endless, silent whiteness. His feet touched the ground, but he had no idea where he was walking.
At the same time, a voice echoed through Mike's mind.
The Fifth Carrier stood before him, its presence undeniable.
— What's the matter, huh? Did you think coming back to yourself meant you silenced me?
Laughter filled the void.
— I never truly left… HAHAHA!
Mike's breathing grew heavier.
— Don't worry, he said in a low, firm voice. I've learned a lot since our first encounter.
He shrouded his mind in black flame. The darkness within the mask trembled and was forced back, the Fifth Carrier retreating into the depths once more.
The tremor at the tips of his claws steadied. Mike regained his focus.
Vlad suddenly found himself back in the place of tragedy. The corridor drenched in red stretched out before him once again. But now he felt something different… the scent of Ethan's blood.
He could see it, hear it, follow it.
And that scent… left a trail.
Vlad followed the trail and saw Ethan.
It was a vision from months ago.
Ethan was at the edge of the forest, speaking to a woman.
"Hey, Jessica, you still haven't found her? You promised me… you said if I helped you, you'd stay by my side. You'd find her!" Ethan's voice was sharp with anger.
Jessica met his gaze calmly, with an almost captivating look.
"You're right… I'll help you. And even more than that…"
She stepped closer, locking her eyes with his… and then she kissed him.
Ethan hesitated at first, then gave in. Their passion consumed them as they fell into each other.
When night fell and Ethan opened his eyes again, his voice was low, determined.
"It's time," he said.
And both of them shifted into their wolf forms. Claws and fangs extended as they ran deep into the forest. The trail ended there.
Meanwhile… During the ritual.
Vlad suddenly gasped for breath, snapping back to himself. His eyes opened, his mind still trembling from what he had seen but now he understood where to go, what their next step had to be.
He lifted his head and looked at the others.
— "I know where he is… at least, I know what his goal is," he said.
Mike slowly withdrew his claws from Vlad's skull. The black flames faded, and the claws receded back into his hands.
