Chapter 19: The Final Blow and a Lingering Threat
The silence that followed Snart's sacrifice was deafening, a gaping void in the heart of the Legends. But it was quickly shattered by a roar of pure, unadulterated rage from Adam. He launched himself at the now-vulnerable Vandal Savage, a human missile fueled by grief and fury.
Savage, reeling from the severance of his immortality, stumbled backward, his eyes wide with a newfound, terrifying fear. The dark magic that had once crackled around him was gone, replaced by a faint, sickly aura. He was still strong, still dangerous, but he was no longer invincible.
"You took him!" Adam screamed, his voice raw, devoid of its usual sarcasm. "You took him from us! You're going to pay for that, you ancient, self-important bastard!"
He unleashed a barrage of telekinetic blasts, not just pushes, but focused, concussive waves designed to inflict maximum damage. Savage roared, deflecting some with his bare hands, but others slammed into him, staggering him, sending him stumbling. Adam was relentless, pouring every ounce of his power, every shred of his grief, into the assault.
The other Legends, galvanized by Adam's fury and Savage's sudden vulnerability, joined the attack. Sara, a blur of white and gold, moved with a lethal grace, her staff a whirlwind of precise strikes, aiming for Savage's newly exposed pressure points. Mick, a roaring inferno of vengeance, unleashed torrents of fire, burning away Savage's remaining cultists and forcing the immortal to defend himself. Ray, now fully operational in his Atom suit, zipped around, delivering powerful, focused blows, while Firestorm unleashed concentrated energy blasts.
This wasn't a tactical retreat or a desperate defense; this was a coordinated, furious assault, a symphony of vengeance.
Savage, cornered and desperate, fought back with brutal efficiency, but his movements were slower, his power diminished. He was a cornered animal, lashing out, but the Legends were a unified force, driven by the memory of their fallen comrade.
"Kendra! Carter! Now!" Rip yelled, his voice strained but firm.
Kendra Saunders and Carter Hall, the reincarnated Hawkpeople, who had been waiting for this precise moment, soared into the sky. Their Nth Metal maces, imbued with the cosmic energy of the meteor, glowed with a blinding light. They were the key. The only ones who could deliver the permanent blow.
They descended, a pair of avenging angels, their maces raised high. Savage, seeing them, seeing the very source of his power turned against him, roared in defiance and terror. He tried to unleash a final, desperate magical blast, but Adam, sensing his intent, intercepted it with a desperate telekinetic shield, absorbing the last vestiges of Savage's dark power. The shield held, barely, and Adam stumbled back, coughing, but the path was clear.
Kendra and Carter slammed their maces into Savage simultaneously, a blinding flash of light and a deafening roar echoing across the desert. The impact was immense, a cosmic force unleashed.
Savage screamed, a sound of pure agony and disbelief. His body began to glow, to shimmer, then to disintegrate. His form flickered, became translucent, then dissolved into a million motes of golden dust that swirled in the wind, carried away by the desert breeze, leaving nothing behind.
Vandal Savage, the immortal tyrant, the bane of history, was finally, truly, permanently gone.
The Legends stood in the silence that followed, battered, exhausted, but victorious. The golden beam from the Waverider faded, the cosmic convergence complete. The desert was still, save for the whisper of the wind.
Adam collapsed to his knees, utterly drained, his body screaming in protest. The adrenaline had faded, replaced by a crushing wave of grief and exhaustion. He had done it. They had done it. But Snart was gone.
Sara was at his side in an instant, pulling him into a fierce embrace. She was crying, silent tears streaming down her face, but her grip was strong, anchoring him. "We did it, Adam. We did it."
He clung to her, burying his face in her shoulder, letting the raw grief wash over him. "He's gone, Sara. Snart's gone."
"I know," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I know. He saved us. He saved the timeline."
The rest of the team gathered around, a silent vigil. Rip, his face streaked with tears, looked at the empty space where Savage had been, then at his team, his eyes filled with a profound mix of sorrow and pride. Ray, his suit powered down, sat on the sand, head in his hands. Mick stood stoically, his face unreadable, but a single tear traced a path through the grime on his cheek. Jax and Stein, unmerged, leaned on each other, exhausted.
They had won. But the victory felt hollow, tinged with the bitter taste of loss.
As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the ancient pyramids, a faint, almost imperceptible shimmer appeared in the air, a ripple in the timestream. It was subtle, easily missed amidst the emotional aftermath. A faint, ethereal whisper, like a distant echo, seemed to emanate from it, a sound that only Adam, with his unique connection to the timeline, seemed to perceive. It wasn't Savage. It was something else. Something new. A consequence. A ripple.
He looked at the shimmering distortion, a prickle of unease running down his spine. 'What was that? Is this… the price? The universe balancing the scales? Savage is gone, but something else… something new is coming. The script isn't over. It's just… changing genres.'
He didn't say anything, not wanting to disturb the solemn moment. They had just defeated an immortal tyrant. They deserved this moment of peace, however fleeting. But the whisper lingered, a faint, unsettling promise of future chaos. Their journey as Legends was far from over. It had just begun.
