ch 16: The mirror in the mist

The chamber of shawls had fallen silent.

Mo Jue stood still, shirt half-loosened, breathing uneven, his glowing eyes locked onto Yan Rui — who hadn't moved since the truth spilled into the air.

> "You've lived more lives than you remember."

> "And every time… I chose you."

The words had weight, like they belonged to someone older than his own memories.

Yan Rui finally turned from the shawls, gaze still dazed. "Then why do I only remember this one?"

Mo Jue hesitated. "Because you weren't supposed to come back."

🌫️ The Mirror Room

Later that night, Yan Rui wandered deeper into the Cold Courtyard. Something pulled at him — a quiet hum inside his bones. He followed it through a narrow stone hallway until he reached a locked door.

But when he touched it, it opened on its own.

The room beyond was smaller than he expected — only a mirror stood at the center, tall and cracked slightly down the middle. No dust. No candles. No reflection.

Just fog.

> "A mirror with no reflection…?" Yan Rui stepped closer.

Then something happened.

The mirror shimmered — and the fog parted, revealing a flash of white stage lights, camera flashes, a modern studio…

His own face. Dressed in actor's clothes. Laughing. Alive.

> "That's… me."

Suddenly, it all rushed back.

A car screeching. A flash of light. The accident.

The antique pendant that cracked when he hit the ground. The one Mo Jue had worn in his dreams.

Then—the fall. Through light. Through pain.

Through time.

> "It was you," Yan Rui whispered, turning as he realized he wasn't alone.

Mo Jue stood in the doorway.

> "You pulled me from that world."

Mo Jue's voice was low. "No. You were always meant to return to this one."

> "Why me?" Yan Rui stepped closer, eyes fierce. "Why take me from a world where I had a life, a name, freedom—?"

Mo Jue's hands clenched. "Because you died there. And your soul didn't belong to that time. It never did."

The Truth of the Curse

Yan Rui's voice cracked. "You said I died for you before. Again and again. So this is just another version of that?"

> "No," Mo Jue said, walking to the mirror beside him. "This is the first time I brought you back before the curse claimed you. I thought if I saved you early enough… fate would break."

> "And what am I now?" Yan Rui said, quietly. "Your second chance?"

Mo Jue didn't answer. Instead, he raised a hand — and touched the mirror.

The surface rippled like water, and another vision shimmered inside.

This time: a woman in crimson robes. A scroll in her hand. A spell spoken aloud.

> "The one who binds the serpent with love shall never live twice. Unless the serpent breaks himself."

The mirror cracked deeper.

Yan Rui looked at Mo Jue, stunned.

> "That's the curse, isn't it?"

Mo Jue nodded. "You weren't the one meant to suffer. I was."

> "Then why do I feel like I'm the one drowning in lives I never lived?"

🔥 The Distance Closes

The room grew quiet again, the mirror's fog returning.

Yan Rui's breath trembled. "You say you want to protect me. But all I've seen is pain."

Mo Jue stepped forward, slowly, stopping just short of touching him.

> "Then let me show you something else."

He leaned in — close, but didn't kiss.

Instead, his forehead touched Yan Rui's forehead.

Distance closed..

He Grabbed Rui's Waist very Light like touching a feather..

Yan rui Stunned and something weighted in his chest Dddum

> "This time, I won't take. I'll wait. But don't ask me not to want."

Their breath mingled. Magic shimmered faintly between them, like a thread.

Yan Rui didn't move away.

He only whispered, "Then stay with me tonight."

🌒 That Night

They didn't touch in heat.

They lay beneath silk and silence, side by side, hearts too loud for dreams. Mo Jue didn't sleep. He only watched.

And Yan Rui, for the first time in this cursed story, felt like he could.
