Chapter twenty four
Evening was coming fast, and Yuta felt his stomach twist with nerves. Soon he would have to report to Lord Elrien's chambers to begin his duties as personal attendant. The thought made his hands shake as he gathered his few belongings.
He looked down at his small snake companion, who was coiled peacefully in his makeshift bed. "Come on, Shadow," he whispered. "I need to wash before I see his lordship. I can't show up dirty."
The snake's red eyes opened and fixed on him with what seemed like understanding. Yuta carefully scooped it up, feeling the warm weight of its body against his chest.
"I can't leave you here alone," he said softly. "What if someone tries to hurt you while I'm gone?"
He made his way through the castle corridors toward the servants' bathing area—a small lake fed by natural springs that the slaves were allowed to use. The water was always cold, but it was clean, and that was more than many places offered.
