My mother's warning about Adrian Valois rang in my ears as I pushed open the bathroom door, desperate for a moment alone. The elegant powder room of the Bennett estate offered temporary sanctuary from the chaos of my thoughts. Leaning against the marble counter, I splashed cold water on my face, trying to wash away the reality of my new living situation.
"Get it together, Sera," I whispered to my reflection.
The door clicked open behind me. I spun around, expecting to find Charlotte Bennett with another passive-aggressive comment. Instead, Adrian's imposing figure filled the doorway, his eyes darkening as they locked with mine.
"What are you doing here?" I gasped.
Adrian stepped inside, closing the door behind him. "I think the better question is what are you doing here, in the Bennett home?"
My heart hammered against my ribs. "My mother didn't give me much choice."
"And you didn't think to tell me?" His voice was low, controlled, but I could sense the tension beneath it.
