I stood at the entrance of the grand Valois mansion, watching the trio in the garden. Leo was chasing after a butterfly while Adrian and his cousin Tristan followed at a leisurely pace. They looked so carefree, so happy. A perfect little family scene that made my stomach twist with jealousy.
I should be down there with them. Not standing up here watching like some outsider.
When Adrian had rehired me as Leo's tutor, I thought things would change. That I might actually become a part of their world. But here I was, still on the outside looking in.
The past week had been strange. Adrian defended me against Camille's accusations, and Leo welcomed me back with open arms. Even Tristan had been friendly, offering me encouragement and support.
But Adrian himself? He'd been distant. Cold. After our passionate encounters, the sudden withdrawal of his attention left me feeling adrift and confused.
"Miss Valois?"
I turned to find a maid hovering nearby.
