Arc II: Veins of Mourndusk
The descent deepened.
The Hollow Shrine's walls no longer pulsed with memory — they recoiled. Each step forward into the sunken corridor felt like crossing into marrow that never belonged to the earth. Dim blue light flickered from cracked vein-lanterns overhead, but they dimmed as the group passed beneath.
No one spoke.
Until Nemea knelt beside a half-sunken tile, running her fingers across a faded burn mark.
"…This is hers," she whispered.
Yarri turned. "What?"
Nemea brushed ash away, revealing an etched sigil half-buried in dust. A flame symbol — broken through the center.
"Serin's squad etched their route marks on Pulse patrols. That's one of theirs. They went missing a year ago during a Soul Nest patrol—never returned. We thought they were torn apart by terrain shifts or Bonebeasts."
Asha crouched beside her, eyes narrowing.
"No Pulse residue. No signs of conflict either. That means whatever found them didn't just kill them. It consumed them."
Yarri's voice broke softly. "Like… soul famine?"
Asha stood slowly. "Exactly like that."
---
The tunnel narrowed ahead. Charred claw marks lined the left wall. Slime-pulse residue streaked the ceiling — recent. The air smelled burnt and sweet, like Pulse essence rotting.
A shape twitched at the far end of the corridor — a slumped body curled inward.
Nemea stepped forward.
"Asha—"
"Wait."
A low crackle echoed through the chamber.
The shape unfolded.
It had once been human. Armor fused to skin. The face half-gone, as if eroded by something from the inside. At its center — pulsing faint and diseased — was a twisted Pulse Core, sunken deep in its chest.
Yarri gasped. "That… was Serin."
"No," Asha said. "That's what ate her."
The walls shivered.
Then it dropped from the ceiling — massive, shifting, warped with exposed bone-skin and pulsing fractures of consumed Genesis. Its Pulse Core was black-orange, bloated and veined like volcanic stone. Around it spun the essence of at least three devoured Cores.

---
The chamber roared.
Yarri fell to a knee, hands over her ears. "Too loud… it's in my head!"
Nemea dragged her back, forming a faint barrier from her Core-light. "Stay behind me—don't let it inside your mind!"
Vrakon froze. Not out of fear. Instinct.
Something in the creature's movement stirred the spiral in his spine.
He didn't see the monster fully — he saw fragments. Flashes.
A torn hand reaching out. A black maw swallowing screams. A mirror cracking.
He shook the vision away.
Asha stepped forward.
Her aura bloomed.
Pulse Core Aura: Deep violet edged with gold. Her domain pulsed in waves — steady, sovereign.
Asha's Domain Skills:
1. Memory Braid – Weaves Pulse echoes into shields.
2. Truthbrand – Binds lies or illusions within her field.
3. Sovereign Mark – Temporarily nullifies lesser domains.
4. Judgement Bloom – A controlled Pulse eruption focused like a blade.
"You three. Stay back."
The Mutated Pulse-Eater lowered its head.
Its maw widened, black-orange glow flaring.
The wind in the Hollow Shrine howled — no longer echoes.
A call to consume.
