Chapter 1

While I was at work, I received a call from my husband's colleague.

"Miss Reed, we've been unable to reach Dr. Grant."

"Her father suddenly had a heart attack and needs emergency heart surgery."

"Can you get in touch with her?"

Hearing about my father-in-law's incident, I dropped everything and rushed to the hospital.

My father-in-law had always been in poor health and frequently hospitalized, so this sudden situation felt like the sky was falling.

I kept trying to contact my husband, but no matter how many times I called, I couldn't get through. I sent countless messages but got no response.

By the time I got to the hospital, the doctor was also very anxious.

"Has Dr. Grant arrived? He's the only one in the entire hospital who can perform this surgery, and he happened to take the day off today."

"Hurry and get her back, it's a matter of life and death! And it's his father!"

I was just as anxious, "Can we transfer him to another hospital for the surgery?"

"There's no time! The patient's condition is critical; we must operate immediately, or else... Please get Dr. Grant here as soon as possible!"

Frustrated, I kept redialing my husband's number, but still no one answered.

Suddenly, an idea struck me. I borrowed my mother-in-law's phone and called again.

It actually went through, but it was a woman who answered.

From the voice, I recognized it as Julia Sanford, my husband's former lover.

"Why is it you again, Sister Sophia? Do you need something? Brother Nate is in the shower now. Oh, don't get the wrong idea. He just finished exercising and is sweaty."

"Today is my birthday. He ran over ten kilometers to buy me a gift, and he's exhausted."

I ignored her sarcastic provocation and got straight to the point.

"Tell him that his father has had a heart attack and must undergo surgery immediately, and he needs to return to the hospital at once!"

Julia stretched her voice over the phone, "Brother Nate, Sister Sophia says your father's about to die and you need to hurry back."

My urgent words turned into a threat from her mouth.

My husband picked up the phone, and his angry voice came through: "Are you done yet?"

"To trick me into going home, you would even curse my father? He's about to have his big birthday celebration, do you have any conscience? If you keep talking like this, I won't let it go!"

I knew this wasn't the time to argue, so I patiently tried to explain.

"Nate Grant! Hurry back, I'm not joking with you."

"Father-in-law is really in bad shape, and you're the only one in the entire hospital who can perform this surgery..."

But before I could finish, the call was abruptly cut off.

When I tried calling back, all I heard was the sound of the phone being turned off.

Beside me, my mother-in-law was already emotionally collapsed, crying her heart out and being supported by others.

"Where's Nate! Where's Nate! What about the old man? He mustn't be in trouble!"

"Hurry and get Nate back to do the surgery for his dad!"

Tomorrow is my father-in-law's seventieth birthday. We planned to have a big celebration to bring some joy, but who knew he'd suddenly have a heart attack.

Both my in-laws have always treated me well, like their own daughter, and I've been as filial as a daughter to them. Even if there's just a slim hope, I won't give up.

Now, I can only hold back my tears and comfort my mother-in-law, "Mom, Dad will be fine, this is his father, Nate will save him."

"I know where he is. I'll go find Nate and bring him back now!"
