It was almost the end of the engagement party when Caleb Grant finally appeared.
He was wearing a black trench coat, looking travel-worn, with an inexplicably lonely expression.
The moment Caleb entered, our eyes met. He glanced at me and walked over.
"Sorry, something came up at work today."
A dazzling necklace was placed around my neck. Caleb's gesture was gentle and considerate, his voice exceptionally pleasant:
"Here, this is your engagement gift."
The crowd laughed and teased, and Mrs. Grant spoke half-jokingly:
"Emily, don't mind my son being busy with work all the time. Look, he spends all he earns on you, doesn't he? In the end, you're still getting the better deal."
To marry Caleb Grant, to outsiders, it indeed seems like I've gotten a good deal.
My family is merely a scholarly household, with my parents being university teachers, while the Grant Family is one of the most affluent in the city.
The previous generations of our families had some interactions, and the moment I met Caleb Grant at the age of ten, I fell in love at first sight.
Since then, Caleb had a little sister-like figure trailing behind him.
But Caleb has always had his white moonlight, Rachel Wong. He liked Rachel for many years and cherished her dearly.
However, Rachel went abroad for her studies in high school and never returned.
Caleb had to stay to inherit the Grant Family's business and couldn't leave. Since then, he became indifferent to other women, much to the worry of all the Grant Family Members.
After graduating college, I joined the Grant Group to be closer to Caleb.
I voluntarily worked overtime every day until Caleb came out of the CEO's office just to happen upon him and exchange a few words.
This went on for three whole years.
One night, suddenly, Caleb, reeking of alcohol, hugged me and kissed my forehead:
"Emily Hayes, I know you like me. Will you be my girlfriend?"
Later, I found out that Rachel Wong had messaged Caleb that day, saying she would never return and wished him to find his happiness.
To be together through such a humble concession, instead of being upset, I felt grateful.
Having liked Caleb for so many years, what more could I ask for than to be his girlfriend?
Everything afterward became somewhat uneventful. Caleb and I dated for eight years, during which he was always courteous, never crossing the line.
Caleb did all a boyfriend should: accompanying me, giving me gifts, and surprising me.
But I never saw any emotion in his eyes.
I thought, living a life with perfect harmony might not be so bad.
This year, the Grant Family Members pushed harder for marriage. Without any proposal or romance, Caleb chose dates for the engagement and marriage registration.
Looking down at the dazzling necklace around my neck, then at the almost perfect Caleb Grant, I suddenly felt dazed.
Have I really gotten a good deal?
