Even the most delicious cake becomes cloying if you eat too much.
By the time I finished a third of it, I already felt somewhat overwhelmed.
Yet I took small bites, carefully chewing, afraid of missing the proposal ring inside.
The whole cake was eaten; my stomach felt bloated, and I stood up with a paler complexion.
It was already 1 a.m., the sky outside was completely dark, and Ethan Grant still hadn't replied.
I couldn't help but dial his number. No one answered the first time, but he picked up the second time.
Ethan Grant's voice carried a hint of reproach:
"I just finished working here, you haven't slept yet?"
"I just finished eating, I even finished the whole cake, and I'm still at the restaurant now."
Ethan didn't ask why I stayed so long; instead, he immediately instructed:
"It's too late now, don't go back by yourself. I'll ask Secretary Black to pick you up later."
After saying that, the call was hastily ended.
Twenty minutes later, Secretary Black's car arrived. I wearily got into the car, and Secretary Black glanced at me, hesitating to speak.
Yawning as sleepiness overcame me, I asked, "What do you want to say?"
"Director Grant just finished his work," Secretary Black carefully chose his words, thinking about how to say it:
"He personally drove Director Xavier home."
The night wind was a bit chilly, and the car heater was on, but I still felt uncomfortable.
I curled up a bit to feel somewhat better.
Ethan went to drive Olivia Xavier home, but left me for the secretary.
Secretary Black drove steadily, and it wasn't long before we reached home. Sleepy, I opened the car door and stumbled a bit, almost falling.
Secretary Black steadied me.
He suddenly asked, "Miss Ashford, did you like the dinner, the gifts, and the cake tonight?"
"Yes, I liked them." I nodded, my eyes a bit sore. The scene, the music, the scent, the dishes, the gifts... everything was to my liking.
Little did I expect that the greater the expectation, the greater the disappointment.
Secretary Black helped me through the villa's front door: "That's great. Director Grant entrusted me with full responsibility to arrange everything. I was afraid I might not do something well, or miss a detail."
It turned out that none of this had any of Ethan Grant's intentions.
A cold wind swept by, suddenly clearing my drowsiness, and I stood there, goosebumps rising all over my body.
