Chapter 21 – The Embarrassment
In a quiet apartment within an upscale residential complex overlooking the city's central park, Emily Carter sat curled up on a soft grey couch. She wore cozy cotton sweatpants and a loose, pale pink T-shirt. Her chestnut hair was tied up in a messy bun, and around her were scattered empty coffee cups and sofa cushions, as if she'd spent the entire day in this warm little nest.
In front of her, Alice Harper—her closest friend since their university days—sat cross-legged on the floor, leaning back against the couch. She wore short denim shorts and an off-shoulder white top, her face lit up with excitement as she scrolled through her phone, laughing now and then.
Alice raised her phone in the air and said teasingly,
"Emily… your boyfriend is all over the internet lately! Every social post is talking about *MaxTable*. They say his food's better than five-star restaurants! Are you planning to keep hiding your feelings forever?"
Emily lifted her eyes from her tablet, her face visibly flushed.
"Alice, how many times do I have to tell you he's not my boyfriend..."
Alice laughed softly, cutting her off,
"Oh right! Just your *dear friend* you've been hung up on since... what, college? Over seven years ago?"
Emily's face turned completely red as she stammered,
"I just... I'm scared. What if he doesn't feel the same? What if I ruin what we have now?"
Alice raised an eyebrow, unimpressed.
"And how long are you going to keep hesitating? Until some other woman takes him? Then all you'll be left with is regret."
"But—" Emily tried to argue, but Alice didn't give her the chance.
"Emily, just call him! Talk to him. Bring up anything... You two went to university together, isn't that reason enough?"
And without warning, Alice snatched the phone from Emily's hand despite her muffled protests, and tapped on "Max" in the contact list.
"Alice! Stop! Please!" Emily whispered in panic, trying to get her phone back. But after only two rings, a familiar voice answered.
"Hello?"
Emily froze. She stared at the phone in disbelief—things were moving far too fast. Alice raised an eyebrow and shoved the phone into her hand, whispering,
"The ball's in your court. Talk."
Max's voice came through the line, warm and familiar,
"Emily? Is everything okay?"
She hesitated, stumbled over her words, then gathered herself and said,
"Yeah… everything's fine. I just… I was wondering, would you like to go out for a bit? Maybe take a walk in the park nearby?"
There was a brief silence before he answered calmly,
"That sounds nice. I'll be there in an hour."
The call ended, and Emily continued staring at her phone like she was trying to make sense of what had just happened.
"Oh my god… what did I just do?!" she said, her voice trembling.
Alice burst into laughter as she stood up.
"You finally did the right thing. Honestly, you're like a high school girl falling in love for the first time!"
Emily covered her face with her hands and looked at Alice anxiously.
"I don't even know what to wear… Is this okay?"
Alice gave her a look of mock horror.
"Seriously? No, absolutely not! That's loungewear. Get up, pick something nice—simple but stylish. We're not keeping Prince Charming waiting, are we?"
She waved her hand dramatically, and Emily let out a nervous laugh before rushing toward her bedroom to get ready.
Before she disappeared into the room, Alice called out after her:
"Go before you regret it… Be brave, and get closer to Max before it's too late."
