Chapter 5: The Speedster Awakens and The Psychic's Prank (Refined)
The air in S.T.A.R. Labs crackled with a new kind of energy. It wasn't the chaotic discharge of the Particle Accelerator, nor the chilling cold of Captain Cold. It was the vibrant, thrumming energy of the Speed Force, finally awakening within Barry Allen. After months of being a silent, comatose fixture in the Med-Bay, the future Flash was stirring. Adam, having just survived his third strategic death, felt a surge of genuine excitement. This is it. The real start. The moment the hero wakes up. Time to put on my best 'I totally saw this coming' face. And maybe a 'I'm just a normal guy who happens to know everything' face. It's a work in progress.
He'd spent the last few days subtly nudging Cisco towards building a more robust metahuman containment system, and Caitlin towards her future role as a medical expert for the impossible. His "psychic consultant" act was well-established, a convenient excuse for his uncanny knowledge. He was a master of misdirection, a connoisseur of plausible deniability.

"Okay, psychic vision update," Adam announced, walking into the Cortex where Caitlin was meticulously checking Barry's vitals, a hopeful tremor in her hands. "I'm seeing… a lot of red. And a very, very fast blur. And a guy who's going to be really confused about how he got here. Also, a distinct craving for… Big Belly Burger. My psychic senses are very specific about fast food. And apparently, they're also very specific about the future dietary needs of speedsters."
Caitlin looked up, a rare, genuine smile gracing her lips, a fragile blossom in the grim atmosphere of the lab. "Adam, his heart rate is stabilizing. His brain activity is… it's almost normal. He's waking up. He's really waking up." Her voice was filled with a mixture of relief and disbelief, a scientist witnessing a miracle she couldn't explain.
Cisco, who had been humming a new theme song for Captain Cold (which Adam had subtly encouraged, because who doesn't love a good villain theme?), practically bounced. "He's really waking up! This is amazing! I knew it! I mean, I hoped it! This is like, the best scientific breakthrough ever! Take that, comas!"
Dr. Wells rolled in, his expression unreadable, but Adam could sense the underlying current of anticipation, the satisfaction of a plan coming to fruition. "Indeed. Mr. Allen's recovery is… proceeding as predicted. A remarkable resilience, wouldn't you agree, Mr. Stiels?" He glanced at Adam, a subtle challenge in his eyes, probing for a reaction.
"Just doing my part, Doc," Adam replied, giving Wells a knowing look, a silent acknowledgment of the unspoken game between them. Oh, you have no idea how much I'm 'illuminating' things for you, Thawne. I'm practically your personal spoiler alert. You're welcome.
A few hours later, the moment arrived. Barry Allen's eyes fluttered open. He looked around, confused, disoriented, his gaze slowly sweeping across the unfamiliar lab. "Where… where am I?" His voice was raspy, weak.
Caitlin was immediately at his side, her voice gentle, her hand resting lightly on his arm. "You're at S.T.A.R. Labs, Barry. You've been in a coma for nine months. After the Particle Accelerator explosion."
"Nine months?" Barry whispered, his eyes wide, a flicker of alarm. "What happened? The lightning… I remember the lightning."
Adam stepped forward, a mischievous grin playing on his lips, a conscious effort to inject some levity into the heavy atmosphere. "Well, Barry, long story short: you got hit by lightning. From a particle accelerator that exploded. And now you're a human battery. Oh, and I'm Adam. Your new, slightly unhinged, psychic consultant. Nice to meet you. You're going to need a lot of therapy. And probably a very understanding tailor, because your clothes are about to get a serious workout."
Barry blinked, then looked at Adam, a flicker of confusion, then amusement, in his eyes. He was clearly overwhelmed, but Adam's irreverence seemed to cut through the fog. "Psychic… consultant?"
"Yeah, it's a long story involving a very vivid dream and a distinct lack of personal space," Adam waved a dismissive hand. "But trust me, I'm going to be your new best friend. Or, you know, your most annoying sidekick. Depends on the day. And whether you bring me Big Belly Burger. My psychic senses are also very good at detecting delicious fast food."
Cisco, unable to contain his excitement, chimed in, practically vibrating. "He's actually really good, Barry! He totally predicted The Mist and Captain Cold! And he helped us figure out how to contain them! He's like, our very own walking, talking spoiler alert!"
Barry, overwhelmed by the information, simply nodded, trying to process everything. He looked at Caitlin, then Cisco, then Adam, a nascent trust forming in his eyes despite the sheer impossibility of it all. Adam knew the initial confusion would be immense. He had to play his part carefully, establishing himself as a valuable, if eccentric, member of the team.
Over the next few days, as Barry slowly regained his strength, he began to realize his impossible speed. Adam, using his "Future Insight" and the system's subtle guidance, helped guide the team's scientific exploration of Barry's powers. He'd suggest specific tests, seemingly random theories that would always lead to a breakthrough.
"Okay, so, my 'neural network' is telling me that if you run really, really fast on this treadmill, you might just break the sound barrier," Adam suggested one afternoon, watching Barry struggle to control his speed, his movements still clumsy. "And maybe, just maybe, you'll create a sonic boom. Just a hunch. My psychic senses are very good with loud noises. And the inherent physics of super-speed. Don't ask."
Barry, intrigued, his eyes alight with a newfound wonder, tried it. And sure enough, a sonic boom reverberated through the lab, rattling the equipment.
Caitlin looked at Adam, her skepticism slowly eroding, replaced by a grudging acceptance and a deep, scientific curiosity. "Adam, your 'hunches' are remarkably accurate. It's almost as if you… know what's going to happen. It's unsettling, but… effective." Her voice held a hint of awe, a scientist confronted with a phenomenon she couldn't explain but couldn't deny.
"Oh, I just have a very active imagination," Adam replied with a wink. "And a lot of free time. You know, when I'm not busy dying. Which, by the way, I haven't done in a while. Feeling pretty good about that. Don't want to overdo it. My system has a very strict 'no permanent death before upgrade' policy, and I'm a stickler for rules." He caught Cisco's eye, a shared, knowing smirk passing between them. Cisco was starting to get it. Not the how, but the what.
One evening, as Barry was testing his speed in the pipeline, Adam decided to pull his first major prank on the newly awakened speedster. He waited until Barry was running at top speed, a red blur, then, using his minor Atmospheric Pressure Manipulation, he subtly shifted the air pressure just enough to create a tiny, almost imperceptible pocket of resistance directly in Barry's path.
Barry, caught off guard, stumbled, his feet losing traction for a split second, sending him sprawling onto the padded floor of the pipeline with an undignified thud. He lay there for a moment, groaning.
[SYSTEM ALERT: HOST SKILL DEPLOYMENT – SUCCESSFUL. PRANK EXECUTION – OPTIMAL. TARGET REACTION – CONFUSION/AMUSEMENT. WARNING: REPEATED PRANKS MAY LEAD TO HOSTILE REACTION. RECOMMENDED: VARY PRANK TARGETS.]
Adam burst out laughing, a genuine, unburdened sound that echoed through the Cortex. "Oh, man! You totally tripped over nothing, Barry! That was amazing! Did you see that, guys? He just ate it! Classic! It's like the universe just decided to personally trip you!"
Barry, rubbing his head, looked up, bewildered, then a slow smile spread across his face. "What happened? It felt like… I hit a wall of air. But there was nothing there!" He looked at Adam, then at Cisco, a suspicion dawning. "Did… did you guys do that?"
Cisco, trying to stifle his own laughter, shrugged, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Must have been a rogue air current, Barry. Happens when you run that fast. The physics get weird." He gave Adam a knowing look, a shared moment of mischievous glee.
Caitlin, however, looked at Adam with narrowed eyes, a hint of suspicion. "A rogue air current? Adam, did you…?" Her voice was low, a blend of exasperation and a faint, almost imperceptible amusement.
Adam held up his hands, feigning innocence. "Me? Dr. Snow, I'm just a humble psychic consultant. I merely predicted that Barry might have a minor, gravity-defying face-plant. It's all part of the job. Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I need to go practice my 'I totally didn't do that' face. It's a work in progress. And it needs more dramatic flair."
He winked, leaving Barry bewildered, Caitlin suspicious but slightly amused, and Cisco trying to hide his snickers. Adam had successfully integrated himself into the team, established his "psychic" cover, and pulled his first major prank on the future Flash. The long game was well and truly underway, and the Arrowverse was about to get a whole lot more chaotic.
