The tension between his ideals and his emotional ties (his desire for a merit-based future, yet his inability to fully let go of legacy through blood) lays the foundation for the story’s deeper conflict. In these early chapters, he comes across as a kind of “Prospero of the tech age”: a man in control, yet quietly burdened by regrets.
