[KAIRO'S POV]
The cabin creaked as the wind blew against the window panes. He sat in silence by the fire, boots on the floor, coat draped across the back of the chair, his body still—but his thoughts restless.
She was asleep in the other room. Curled up under a threadbare blanket, breathing soft. Like she belonged there.
But she didn't.
> No one belonged here anymore. Not since Aelira.
Kairo's jaw clenched at the thought.
---
He stared into the fire.
And the fire stared back.
---
The girl had said her name was Lyra.
Simple. Soft. It suited her.
And yet something about it made his chest feel tight.
---
"Alpha?"
He turned at the voice.
It was Gavyn, his second-in-command, standing in the doorway. Wet from the rain, eyes sharp.
"She's still here?" Gavyn asked, nodding toward the back.
"She's not a threat," Kairo muttered.
Gavyn stepped closer. "You're sure?"
Kairo didn't answer.
"She crossed our borders. That's usually punishable."
"She's not usual."
"Then what is she?"
Kairo's eyes darkened. "I don't know yet."
---
Gavyn studied him for a long moment.
"Your scent changed when you found her," he said quietly.
Kairo's fists tightened.
"I'm not talking about mates," Gavyn added quickly. "Just… something in you shifted."
Kairo stood.
"Leave us."
"But—"
"Now."
Gavyn exhaled but nodded. "As you wish, Alpha."
He left, closing the door behind him.
---
Kairo moved to the hallway.
The soft sound of Lyra's breathing was like a thread pulling him forward.
He shouldn't care.
He didn't care.
But his feet still moved toward her room.
---
She stirred when he opened the door.
"Sorry," he muttered. "Didn't mean to wake you."
Her voice was rough with sleep. "You didn't."
She sat up, blanket falling slightly. Her hair was a mess, cheeks flushed from heat. She looked… human. Fragile. Not at all like the thing that had stirred his wolf awake.
But that was the problem.
---
"What are you?" he asked her.
She blinked. "You already asked me that."
"And I still don't believe your answer."
"I told you—I don't know."
Kairo crossed his arms. "You smell like wolf… but not exactly. You have power. It's sleeping, but it's there. I felt it."
She looked down at her hands.
"I don't feel powerful," she whispered.
"That doesn't mean you're not dangerous."
---
Silence.
Then, softly—
"Why does it matter to you?"
He looked at her.
And for a second, the memories returned like lightning behind his eyes.
Aelira.
The first time she smiled.
The last time she lied.
---
He sat down in the chair across from her.
"My last mate lied about who she was," he said, voice low. "She infiltrated my pack. Slept in my bed. Told me she loved me. Then slit the throat of my best warrior in the middle of the night and set fire to our eastern outpost."
Lyra's eyes widened. "Oh my God…"
"She said it was just business," he added, tone hollow. "But it broke something in me."
---
He didn't know why he told her that.
Maybe because he wanted her to know what kind of man sat in front of her.
Cold. Dead inside. Beyond fixing.
---
"She's gone now?" Lyra asked softly.
"She's ashes."
---
Silence again.
But this time it wasn't empty.
It was full of things unspoken.
---
Then Lyra said the thing that shook him.
"I'm not her."
His eyes snapped to hers.
"I know you don't trust me," she continued. "I wouldn't either. But I didn't come here to hurt anyone."
"Then why did you come?"
She hesitated.
Then looked at him with something like fear. Or truth.
"I followed a pull I didn't understand. A letter told me I'd know where to go… and when I saw your eyes, I knew I was close."
---
Something in his chest cracked.
He stood abruptly.
"This was a mistake."
"Kairo—"
"Don't call me that."
"I didn't mean—"
"You should leave."
Her voice trembled.
"I have nowhere to go."
---
He turned his back to her.
Because if he looked at her again… he wasn't sure he'd be able to say it.
> She reminded him of fire.
And fire was the last thing he needed to touch again.
