Chapter 10 – The Beta’s Mate

[LYRA'S POV]

By morning, she felt like a cracked mirror.

Not shattered—just… fragile. Reflecting too much.

She didn't tell Kairo about the voice in the wind.

Didn't tell him she heard the name "Sheol" like it was tattooed into her bones.

She wasn't sure why.

Maybe because he still looked at her like a stranger he wanted to trust—but couldn't afford to.

Or maybe because part of her wasn't ready to know what it meant either.

---

Kairo had left early again. Pack matters, he said.

But this time… he didn't lock the door behind him.

She wasn't sure if that was trust—or a test.

---

She wandered outside for the first time in days.

The morning sun stretched across the clearing, brushing the trees with gold. The forest looked normal. Peaceful. As if it hadn't bent itself in half for her the night before.

She rubbed the spot where the mark glowed beneath her skin.

Still faintly warm.

Still there.

---

"Are you the girl who nearly set the forest on fire?"

The voice came from behind her—light, teasing, and unmistakably female.

Lyra turned.

A woman stood near the porch, arms crossed, dark red braid falling over her shoulder, and mischief in her smile. She wore a black leather jacket and combat boots like someone who could win a war and flirt while doing it.

"I'm Elyna," she said. "Beta's mate. Or as some call me—'that meddling she-wolf who needs to mind her business.'"

Lyra blinked. "…Hi."

Elyna grinned. "You're cuter than I expected. He's so broody, I thought he'd hide you in a coffin."

Lyra blinked. "He didn't hide me—"

"Oh, honey. He didn't have to. He built walls."

---

Elyna flopped down on the porch bench, gesturing for Lyra to sit beside her.

"I figured you could use a friend. Or at least someone who talks more than the Alpha's usual grunts."

Lyra hesitated, but sat.

"I saw you collapse yesterday. Kairo doesn't panic often. But he looked like he wanted to kill the wind itself."

Lyra's stomach fluttered. "He doesn't… care."

Elyna snorted. "He doesn't want to care. Big difference."

---

There was a long pause.

Then Lyra asked, "Have you ever seen a mark like this before?"

She pulled down her collar just enough for Elyna to see.

The woman leaned in, gaze sharpening.

"That's not a mate mark. It's older. Raw. That's pre-wolf magic."

Lyra's heart beat faster. "Pre-wolf?"

"Magic from before the packs. Before the bloodlines were split. It's practically myth."

"You believe in myths?"

Elyna's smile faded. "In this forest? I believe in everything."

---

The wind shifted.

Elyna stood up.

"I have to go before Gavyn thinks I'm corrupting you with sass and sarcasm."

Lyra stood too. "Thank you. For not treating me like… something broken."

Elyna gave her a look. Soft. Knowing.

"You're not broken, Lyra. You're waking up. And it terrifies him."

---

Lyra blinked. "Who?"

But Elyna just winked.

Then vanished into the trees like a shadow in daylight.

---

[LATER THAT NIGHT – KAIRO POV]

He returned to find her outside again, standing barefoot in the grass.

Watching the trees.

Like she was waiting for something.

Or someone.

---

"You shouldn't be out alone," he said quietly.

She didn't look at him.

"I wasn't."

"Who?"

"Someone who talks in full sentences."

---

He sighed.

"She shouldn't have come."

"Maybe you're just mad she didn't ask for permission first."

He stepped closer. The air between them crackled.

"She plays with fire."

Lyra finally turned to him. Her eyes were calm.

"Maybe I'm fire."

---

And for one stupid second, Kairo almost kissed her.

But he didn't.

Because his wolf was howling.

Not with warning.

But with want.
