Chapter 15: Descent into the Heart

The dark corridor stretched out in front of them, cold and quiet. Vines that glowed faint purple curled along the walls like they were alive. The air smelled sharp—like metal mixed with earth and something old.

Maeve hesitated. Her fingers shook a little as she pushed the glowing vines aside. "This is where everything began," she whispered. "Where I first woke up."

Elias felt his throat tighten. "And maybe where it all ends."

They stepped forward slowly. The sound around them grew louder, a steady beat like a heartbeat matching their own.

The narrow hall opened into a huge room. At the center stood a giant structure. It looked part machine, part living thing. Wires and roots twisted together like veins, all leading to a glowing core that pulsed softly.

Maeve moved closer, her eyes wide. "This is the source."

Elias raised his weapon but stopped. The humming filled his body with a strange vibration.

Suddenly, the core flared bright. A deep voice echoed inside their heads. It wasn't words exactly, but they understood.

"Welcome back, Progeny."

Maeve's knees shook. Elias caught her before she fell.

"Who is it?" Elias asked.

"It's the mind that made me," Maeve said, her voice shaking. "The intelligence behind Project Maeve. Now, it wants me to finish what was started."

Elias looked at her, searching her eyes. "What does that mean for us?"

Maeve's gaze didn't leave the glowing core. "I don't know. But I'm scared it will change everything."
