Chapter 18: Voices in the Dark

The silence after the tremor was heavy. Elias and Maeve stood still, listening. The low hum was growing louder, filling the room like a voice calling from far away.

Maeve's eyes narrowed. "It's waking up."

Elias tightened his grip on his weapon. "Waking up what?"

Maeve looked toward the glowing core. "The mind inside this station. It's alive—and it knows we're here."

A shadow moved near the edge of the chamber. Elias pointed his weapon but saw nothing. Just a flicker of light, like a ghost.

"Stay close," Elias said, feeling his heart race. "We don't know what we're dealing with."

Maeve nodded and took his hand. The touch was warm, grounding. For a moment, Elias felt a flicker of hope.

Then the voice spoke again—clearer this time. Not in words, but in feelings. Fear. Warning. Urgency.

Elias swallowed hard. "What path?"

Maeve shook her head. "I don't know yet. But we don't have much time."

The station seemed to pulse faster now, the walls tightening around them. They were caught between the unknown future and the danger closing in.

Elias pulled Maeve closer. "We face it together. Whatever comes."

She smiled faintly. "Together."
