But at that moment, he couldn't resist the urge to be a little reckless.
"For your sake, Captain!"
Retsu Unohana's beautiful eyes widened, showing intense bewilderment.
"For me?" she asked, each word drawn out slowly. Her demeanor took on a more cunning, subtly menacing edge.
Seeing her hand move towards her Zanpakutō, Kyōraku Callum hastily explained, "Swordsmanship! I've dedicated myself to Zanjutsu for many years, and have cultivated various sword intents during my training."
Retsu Unohana's smile turned wistful. "That's excellent."
Clearly, Kyōraku Callum's firmness hadn't troubled her. However, she showed no inclination to defend Seinosuke Yamada further; her apology was the limit of her intervention as Captain. One must bear the consequences of their own actions.
"Right, Kyōraku-kun," Retsu Unohana said, tidying the documents on her desk. She looked at him intently. "Tell me, why did you choose the 4th Division?"
The 4th Division held a lower status among the Gotei 13, primarily handling support tasks: daily healthcare, emergency treatment, and even sanitation within the Seireitei.
To others, Kyōraku Callum's choice seemed impulsive, even sparking negative rumors at the academy—cowardice, for example.
After all, the 4th Division, being a support division, offered minimal combat opportunities. If the 4th Division ever had to fight on the front lines, the Seireitei would be near collapse.
Kyōraku Callum hesitated. He knew sometimes honesty wasn't the best policy, but he couldn't resist the urge to be a little reckless.
"For your sake, Captain!"
Retsu Unohana's beautiful eyes widened, showing intense bewilderment.
"For me?" she asked, each word drawn out slowly. Her demeanor seemed to be shifting towards a more cunning and subtly menacing one.
Seeing her hand move towards her Zanpakutō, Kyōraku Callum hastily explained, "Swordsmanship! I've dedicated myself to Zanjutsu for many years, and have cultivated various sword intents during my training.
However, this isn't what I truly seek. I've been relentlessly searching for the highest realm of swordsmanship, and I discovered records of Unohana Yachiru's style."
Kyōraku Callum watched Retsu Unohana's expression change—from gentle to delighted, then to cold, and finally to open hostility, a chilling aura enveloping the office.
Undeterred, Kyōraku Callum continued, "Soul Society's greatest villain, master of all sword styles, defeated by Captain-Commander Yamamoto in battle, and then vanished without a trace."
The chill dissipated, and a gentle smile returned to Retsu Unohana's face.
"But what does this have to do with me?" she asked.
Kyōraku Callum was stunned. He'd considered various reactions, but this one had completely blindsided him.
If she denied it outright, he couldn't force her agreement. After all, even among all the Captains, Retsu Unohana remained among the strongest.
"Very well, Kyōraku-kun," Retsu Unohana said, cutting him off. "As the 6th Seat of the 4th Division, your future task is to lead the 6th Squad."
Kyōraku Callum nodded, agreeing. Though, given his personality, he'd likely delegate most of the 6th Squad's duties to his vice-captain.
"Also," Retsu Unohana continued, tilting her head with a slight smile, "would you be willing to demonstrate your sword intent?"
Kyōraku Callum was surprised but readily agreed.
"Of course."
The moment he spoke, the atmosphere in the office shifted again. An intense, sharp sword intent radiated from Kyōraku Callum, like a blooming lotus, layered upon itself. Within each petal, a completely different sword intent was hidden.
A hint of surprise flashed in Retsu Unohana's eyes. Kyōraku Callum's display had exceeded her expectations. After a moment of contemplation, she said,
"During the next full moon, I will visit the 4th Division's Training Ground One. I expect you to be there."
Retsu Unohana ultimately couldn't resist the allure of swordsmanship, especially a style entirely new to her. The temptation was irresistible, like a starving person suddenly presented with a lavish feast.
Retsu Unohana still had numerous duties to attend to. The 4th Division, with its large number of members, had far more responsibilities than other divisions: staff assignments, patient treatment, injury reports, managing the medical facility, etc.
It was a constant flurry of activity for Retsu Unohana and the other seated officers.
Kyōraku Callum, guided by a 6th Squad member, received his Shinigami uniform and proceeded to the 6th Squad barracks. However, as they approached, loud arguing could be heard from within.
"You useless fool! With your pathetic Kidō, you dare challenge me? Don't you want to live anymore?!"
The voice was grating, like nails scraping across a chalkboard. The piercing sound was excruciating.
Kyōraku Callum frowned, turning to the Shinigami beside him.
"What in the world is that?"
The guiding Shinigami, much like Yamada Hanatarō, was timid—a common trait among some 4th Division members. Shinigami who feared combat often gravitated here.
Retsu Unohana's policy of never refusing anyone had resulted in a diverse, and sometimes chaotic, mix of personalities within the 4th Division.
Kyōraku Callum wasn't particularly concerned, but he did want a peaceful work environment, so some intervention was necessary.
The guide visibly trembled at Kyōraku Callum's question, replying nervously,
"That's our 6th Squad vice-captain, Kurashima Daiki. He was supposed to become the squad captain after the last one left, but..."
He looked at Kyōraku Callum cautiously.
Kyōraku Callum's expression darkened. His arrival had cost Kurashima Daiki the position—a situation eerily similar to that of Seinosuke Yamada.
