## Chapter Fifteen: Ghost of Border City

---

Lux arrived in **Border City** under the cloak of darkness, disguised in simple clothes to avoid attracting attention. The city was a maze of narrow streets illuminated by cold neon lights, and towering buildings that pierced the polluted clouds. The atmosphere was charged with tension, and security robots and patrolling soldiers were everywhere.

Lux found the **Central Courthouse**, a massive building of metal and glass. Security was tight, and he knew rescuing Dr. Kane wouldn't be easy. He had to find a way to infiltrate without drawing attention.

While wandering through the city, Lux overheard whispers about the **"Back Alleys,"** illegal areas where shady deals took place and information could be obtained under the table. He decided to go there.

In one of the dark back alleys, bustling with people of various races and beings, Lux met an informant named **Snake**. Snake was dishevelled, but his eyes gleamed with intelligence.

"What do you want, stranger?" Snake asked in a gruff voice, looking at Lux cautiously.

"I'm looking for information," Lux said in a low voice. "About **Dr. Kane**. His upcoming trial and execution."

Snake offered a sly smile. "Ah, the mad scientist. Many want his head. But he's no ordinary scientist."

"What do you mean?" Lux asked, his interest piqued.

"It's said that Dr. Kane was working on a top-secret project, one that could change the very nature of life," Snake said, lowering his voice. "Something about the **'Immortals'** and their powers."

Lux was shocked. "Immortals?" He had never heard that term before.

"Yes," Snake nodded. "They're not demons, nor vampires, nor Alphas. They're something else. It's said they possess the secrets of life and death."

This revelation was surprising to Lux. This world seemed to grow more complex with every new piece of information. "When is his execution?"

"Tomorrow at dawn," Snake replied. "In the public execution square. It'll be a big event."

Lux returned to a temporary hideout he found in the city, pondering the information he had obtained. The risks were great, but he was determined to save Dr. Kane. If Dr. Kane possessed information about the "Immortals" or the "Vessel Forgers," he could be the key to Laila's future and perhaps even his own return to his world.
