CHAPTER 30: The Uninvited Guest
Florida sat on the couch, a throw blanket around her knees, eyes trained on the screen though she barely followed the storyline. The remote rested unused beside her. It was late afternoon, and the quiet in the mansion felt heavier than usual—until the front door opened.
The sound of heels striking marble sliced through the silence.
Her body stiffened.
The scent of expensive perfume wafted in first, followed by the unmistakable voice—sweet and sharp.
"Bryant, did you miss me? New York is lovely but exhausting."
Florida didn't move.
She didn't need to turn around to know who it was.
Liza.
A suitcase rolled against the floor. Then another. And another. Three, maybe four in total. Florida blinked slowly.
Bryant stepped in behind her, his tone neutral. "I told you not to overpack."
"You told me not to waste money," Liza corrected, pouting. "Which is why I didn't get a hotel. The one I wanted was under renovation anyway."
He didn't respond.
Florida's fingers curled slightly on her lap.
She had seen this moment before. Not exactly, but in flashes. In fears.
But this wasn't a nightmare.
It was real.
Bryant moved past her, and for a breath of a second, his eyes met hers.
Just a flicker.
Then nothing.
It wasn't the bags or the heels or the perfume she noticed first. It was the silence. The kind that told you that you didn't matter anymore.
Liza's eyes caught hers next, smug and glinting.
"Oh," she said sweetly. "You're still here. I assumed you'd… left."
Florida didn't reply.
She turned back to the screen.
Liza laughed lightly and headed upstairs, her voice trailing behind her. "I'll need the guest room with the balcony. Light's better there. My skin demands it."
Bryant remained by the staircase, unmoving.
He didn't speak to Florida.
Didn't acknowledge her.
Just turned and followed Liza up the stairs.
When the door shut above, Florida leaned forward and picked up the remote.
She didn't change the channel.
Just turned off the screen entirely.
The silence was better than pretending.
