To walk across the desolate wasteland was to walk in a constant procession across a lost kingdom. The once-verdant forests had been dead for ages, their leaves ripped from their branches.
Even the air was heavy, as though the earth itself had been corrupted by the ancient evil that stretched before them. With every pace they took, they felt themselves drawn deeper into the heart of darkness.
Ryuu's mind was a whirlpool, constantly reverting to Selene's final words about the Heartstone and what it really stood for.
The weight of his potential fate was on him, suffocating him with the knowledge that he alone was the holder of the ability to save or destroy the world. Time continued passing, leading him towards a choice he was not sure he was ready to make.
"We are closer," Selene stated, her voice low but strong. Her golden eyes scanned the horizon, watching for any sign of danger.
"The resting place of the Heartstone is before us in the mountains. But the path will not be simple. The ancient seal that holds the darkness within is a hard one to shatter." Selene continued.
Aeris, who had been quiet for some time, finally spoke. "We can't continue to experience setbacks. The Order is still after us, and time is running out. Whatever this seal is, we must get there before them."
Ryuu glanced over at her, his expression stern. "I don't think we should be worried about just the Order."
Selene nodded, aware of his concern. "The Master knows we are on the way. He will do anything to prevent us from arriving at where the Heartstone lies. But the Order is not our worst enemy."
"There are others who will seek to use the Heartstone for their purposes—others who have waited since the beginning of time." Selene concluded.
Ryuu considered this wildly. "Who else would want the Heartstone?"
Selene's face turned dark.
"The Dark Ones. An older order that existed before the Order. They were the ones who first bound the ancient evil in the Heartstone. They believed that only someone with a heart that was pure would be able to wield it without being consumed by its dark energy."
"But I am not pure of heart," Ryuu growled furiously. "I've already proven that I cannot use the Heartstone without giving everything up."
Aeris put a hand on his shoulder. "We're all imperfect, Ryuu. But we're trying our best. That's all anyone can expect."
The heaviness of her words hung in the air as they moved on, but Ryuu felt they couldn't know what dangers the road ahead held.
When they reached the base of the mountain, the sky was dark, covering the earth in an unwholesome pall.
The wind moaned up over the rocky ridges with a premonition of death. The Heartstone's resting place was deep within the mountains, and it was guarded by an old seal that had been standing there for centuries.
"Stay close," Selene warned, voice sharp and focused. "The seal is impenetrable. Only someone who shares the Guardians' blood can breach it."
Ryuu looked at her, confused. "But you're not the last Guardian alive. How do we break through?"
Selene hesitated, then answered. "The seal marks the Heartstone itself. Its power will guide us beyond the barrier. But past that point, there is no return."
Ryuu's heart skipped a beat at the words. "What do you mean, 'no returning'?"
Selene's eyes turned serious.
"The deeper we go into the mountain, the more danger we risk losing ourselves to the Heartstone's influence. It will try to tempt us, to corrupt us with what it has to give. Only those who are entirely capable of facing their own shadows can expect to emerge unscathed. The rest."
Her voice trailed off, as if the price was too terrible to speak.
Aeris took the lead, her expression resolute. "Then we'll go and we'll do it together. No one gets left behind."
Ryuu assented, though the uncertainty in his mind had not been dispelled. They were entering a world where even Selene was too frightened to venture.
The Heartstone's power might maybe be their deliverance, but it was an unstable energy that could change them into something new.
As they went further into the mountain, the air grew cold and the shadows deepened around them.
The cavern walls they walked through were adorned with ancient carvings, depicting forgotten wars and symbols of power that Ryuu wasn't familiar with.
"This place…"
Aeris breathed, her voice full of awe. "It's like we're walking through the pages of history itself."
Selene nodded severely. "This is the Hall of the Dark Ones. They were the original holders of the Heartstone, who were entrusted with its power until they were betrayed by one of their own kind. The Heartstone was to be sealed away forever, but somehow fate has led us here."
As they progressed, the whispers started. They were faint at first, barely audible, like the noises of voices carried by the wind. But the farther they journeyed, the louder the whispers became, more clear.
Ryuu tightened his grip on the Heartstone, his chest tightening with unease. "What is that?"
"The Heartstone's power is rousing," Selene warned him, her gaze sweeping over the shadows around them. "It will try to speak to you, to entice you into submission with its might. You cannot weaken to it, Ryuu. Do not allow it to contaminate your mind."
It was harder than Ryuu had expected. The whispers were seductive, their voices surrounding his mind like a gentle skein of silk.
You are strong now. You have only just begun to realize what you are capable of. The world is yours to claim. Wield the power of the Heartstone, and you shall never be weak again. You may be anything you have ever dreamed.
Ryuu's heart accelerated. His fingers trembled, and the Heartstone's light pulsed in sync with his heart.
He could feel the power coursing through him, heating him up and making him powerful. But at the same time, he felt like losing something of himself, like being overpowered by the Heartstone's will.
"No," Ryuu whispered, his head shaking. "I won't let it control me."
Selene's voice penetrated the haze of need. "Ryuu, hear me! You are stronger than this. The Heartstone can only control you if you will allow it."
Ryuu inhaled, focusing on Selene's voice. He clutched the Heartstone tighter, fighting the suffocating pressure of its power.
Slowly, the whispers died down, sound replaced by the thud of his own heart.
"I. I'm still me," Ryuu said in an unwavering tone but with resolve. "I will never forget that I am who I am."
They reached the center of the cavern where the Heartstone's resting place lay. An ancient altar of stone before them was surrounded by swirling dark energy. The seal lay openly visible, a huge energy barrier that pulsed with potential.
"This is it," Selene said to him, her voice firm but laced with fear. "Place the Heartstone on the altar. The seal will react to it. But be cautious, once you do this, there is no going back. The Heartstone will claim you or destroy you."
Ryuu took a deep breath. There was no longer any fleeing. The world belonged to him, and the choice was his to make.
With a strong hand, Ryuu placed the Heartstone on the altar.
The cave trembled and the seal burned with pure light.
