Chapter Forty-six

The summons came as Phyllis delivered my breakfast. My father was home, and I was to have Darren escort me to his office at ten a.m. sharp. She didn’t elaborate upon his order; simply, I was to be there. No questions. Arrive on time like the punctual prisoner I was.

Although I’d been trying to consume the food that was brought to my suite, Phyllis’s report of my father’s return and proclamation of my appearance had my stomach once again in knots.

What would I learn or more accurately, what would I be told?

The scrambled eggs and fresh fruit lost their appeal as I imagined him sitting behind his desk. No longer did I imagine approaching the father I’d known my whole life, the one who supported my decisions and even indulged my goals.

The man downstairs was different.

I was different.

My world would never be the way it had been.
