Chapter 11: Embers of a Bond

Back in the cave, Arden sat with the Pyrefire Bloom fruit in hand, still unsure how to use it or what exactly it would do once inside him. But a fruit was still a fruit, he was going to eat it one way or another.

He rolled it between his fingers, the glow soft but warm.

Just as he leaned forward to take a bite, he noticed the cub. It wasn't even trying to hide the way it stared with eyes wide, hungry—not for food, but for something more.

The same hunger Arden knew all too well.

The need to grow stronger. To never feel helpless again.

He let out a tired breath, then offered a crooked smile.

"You want this, huh?" he said quietly, holding up the fruit. "You and I can share ."

He stared at the cub for a long second, remembering the first time he saw it. Small. Fragile. But not broken.

The beast had its own fire buried deep, no matter that its affinity was wind.

Even now, Arden could tell. Every time he left to hunt, the cub would train. It would bite the air, scratch the stone, chase after nothing like it was something.

It wanted to be ready. Just like him.

"Well then," he muttered, taking the fruit to his mouth and biting a chunk off with a crunch and offered the small chunk toward the cub. "Let's see where this takes us."

The cub didn't hesitate. It snapped up the piece, swallowing it whole. But the moment it slid down its throat, its body twitched. Then tensed.

A sharp cry escaped its mouth. Its limbs flailed, breath turning ragged. Flames danced faintly around its fur, flickering unnaturally, and its eyes started to dim.

"Shit," Arden swore under his breath, moving fast. "Easy, hold on."

He pressed his palm against the side of the cub's neck, close to its pulse. Closing his eyes, he guided his life energy into the cub's body, focusing it like he'd practiced.

The pulse of his own life force was steady now, not perfect, but calm enough to share.

And slowly after few minutes, the cub's spasms faded. Its chest rose and fell again as the flames eased.

Then came the familiar chime of the system. But it came with an information Arden wasn't ready for this time.

Companion mutation successful

Species: Duskripple Mewl (variant)

Affinity: Wind-Flare

Trait Gained: Soul-Linked Instinct – Can sense and mirror the emotional state and intent of its bonded companion. Enhances support capability during battle and allows joint evolution when exposed to compatible life energy fields.

Additional Effect: Rapid adaptive growth. Strength scales with proximity to bonded user's energy.

Arden stared at the screen in awe, then looked at the cub again.

Its breathing had steadied. The soft flicker of flame still danced in its fur, now laced with streaks of silver and deep violet.

"Well, guess we're stuck with each other now," he said with a low chuckle. "Didn't think you had it in you."

The cub huffed, weak but aware. Arden reached over, scratching gently behind its ear.

"You better not die before me. I'm counting on you."

He sat back, letting his head rest against the cave wall, eyes drifting toward the fruit again—what was left of it.

That one moment of kindness had cost them both a gamble. But this… this felt right.

The cub curled beside him, its breathing slow and steady.

Its fur still shimmered faintly, touched by the afterglow of transformation, and Arden felt the warmth of it against his side.

He sat quietly, eyes half-closed, with his hand moving gently through the soft tufts of its coat.

The creature no longer trembled or shied away. It had accepted him, chosen him, and that meant more than he could put into words.

He stared into the quiet cave, letting the silence speak. The fire from the fruit had passed, but something remained. Not just power. Connection.

"Never thought I'd see this," he muttered under his breath. "A magical beast… actually trusting me."

His palm rested against the cub's chest, feeling the steady thrum of life beneath.

Their rhythms matched, slow and grounded, almost like their energies were tuning to each other.

Maybe it wasn't just the fruit, or the fight they survived. Maybe it was something else.

His life energy, his presence… whatever it was, it opened a path that most soul hunters only dreamed of.

If this was real.. if the bond held, then he had just stepped into something much bigger.

The cub let out a low hum, not quite a purr, but something deeper. It vibrated softly through the ground, through Arden's bones. A promise, unspoken but clear.

He smiled and leaned in, whispering near its ear. "I'll call you Zephyra. From now on, you're my companion."

Zephyra twitched slightly at the name, but didn't move away. Her eyes fluttered shut again, as if content.

Arden rested his back against the stone wall, finally turning to the last piece of the fruit.

Its glow hadn't dimmed, and neither had its heat. He no longer hesitated.

With a calm breath, he brought it to his mouth and bit down.

The taste was sharp, a little bitter, but he swallowed quickly.

And when it hit his core, the change was instant, not painful but awakening.

The world seemed to slow, his senses sharpening at once.

The warmth didn't burn—it cleared. Like mist being swept aside by the wind.

He could feel the subtle fluctuations in the air, the heat clinging to the stone walls, the faint pulse of energy left behind by Zephyra.

His body didn't tremble. It aligned. Like pieces falling into place. Then the system rang again, its familiar chime echoing softly in his mind.

Pyrefire Bloom absorbed.

Gained Life Signature: Crimson Core

Effect: Enhances control and recovery of fire-based energy. Stabilizes volatile fragments and increases internal energy efficiency.

Additional Effect: Affinity Conduction – Increases compatibility with elemental energy of all types. Accelerates fragment absorption and fusion rate.

Arden let out a breath, slow and steady. His fingers curled slightly, feeling the warmth settle into his veins.

"Not bad," he said with a grin, glancing down at Zephyra. "We're just getting started."

And this time, when the cub opened her eyes, they burned faintly with the same fire that now lived in his own.
