The next day, Savannah's parents came home early. Savannah, we're back!, Mrs Will said aloud and noticed Savannah was sleeping on the couch. I can't believe she slept on the couch all night instead of her comfy bed, she said to Mr Will.
Mr Will walked closer to Savannah and woke her up, aren't you going to school Savannah dear?, he said with a gentle tone to Savannah who just woke up.
She stretched on the couch with her eyes closed for a few seconds then she looked at her parents. Good morning, mum and dad, she said and opened her arms wide and her parents gave her a warm hug.
I won't be going to school today, she said and her parents quickly withdrew from the hug. Why?, Mr Will asked as he was baffled by Savannah's words while Mrs Will sat by Savannah's side shocked because she knew that no matter what, Savannah will never stay alone at home when she knows that nobody in the neighborhood will be at home till its late in the afternoon. The adults in the neighborhood are working class while the teenagers go to school and the college students will go to college.
Well, someone tried to scare me last night so I tripped over and broke my left ankle, she said and Mrs Will quickly checked her left ankle. All thanks to my friend who brought me home. Savannah said and her mother gasped.
Oh my God, it's swollen, why didn't you go to the hospital?, Mrs Will asked worriedly.
I thought you would come home to put a cast on it, Savannah said innocently.
Since you have made the mistake, let's go to the hospital before it gets worse, he said and took his car keys.
Dad, I haven't brushed my teeth or bath, I can't go to the hospital like this, she said. Her father sighed and looked at his wife. Sweetheart, help her to the bathroom, he said to his wife and his wife obeyed him.
When they were about to enter the car, Ryan walked up to them. Good morning,Mr and Mrs Will, he said with a brief smile. Good morning, they said in unison and what can we do for you? Mr Will asked.
Nothing, I just wanted to check up on Savannah and see whether her parents are back to take her to the hospital, he said and Savannah came out of the car because her mother helped her into the car earlier.
Hi, Ryan, I'm fine and we're going to the hospital now so it's nothing to be worried about, thanks for coming though, she said to Ryan with a smile.
Do you live in this neighborhood and did you happen to see Savannah break her left ankle last night, Mrs Will asked.
Yes, I live in this neighborhood and I was the one that brought her home. In case you don't know this, we go to the same school, we're desk mates and she is my friend.
Wow, that's lovely. What's your name?, Mrs Will asked. My name is Ryan Enzo, Ryan replied. Are you Mr and Mrs Enzo's second son?, Mrs Will asked and Ryan nodded. Thank you so much, Ryan, for helping our daughter home last night, Mrs Will said with a wide smile. Thank you, Ryan, Mr Will also said as he shooks Ryan's hand.
Well, it's time to go!, he exclaimed after he released Ryan's hand. They entered the car and Savannah waved Ryan goodbye by sticking her head and hands out of the window. Bye!, see you later, Savannah said aloud with a huge smile and Ryan waved her goodbye too.
At school, Ryan sat alone then the bell for the first period rang and it was not long when their Geography teacher walked in.
Good morning, class, Mr Maxwell said. Good morning, sir, they echoed. He looked around and noticed Savannah wasn't in class. Ryan, where is Savannah or is she still coming cause I heard she is a latecomer even though she joined us two days ago?, he asked joking but only few got his joke.
She won't be coming to school today, sir, Ryan answered. Why?, Mr Maxwell asked.
Well, she broke her ankle and she's probably at the hospital as we speak, Ryan answered and Mr Maxwell nodded.
Then tell her I wish her a quick recovery, he said and scribbled environmental conservation on the board with a chalk. This is the topic we will be treating today, he said and students jotted down the topic while Ryan laid his head on the desk.
At the hospital Savannah's parents works in , Savannah sat on a bench in front of the office of an orthopedist whom her parents went in to see after they examined her ankle to assess the severity of the twist. A young girl with her mother came to sit beside her and few seconds later, the girl brought out a book from her mother's bag and started reading.
Savannah scanned her from head to toe and she knew she'd also come to see the orthopedist because she had an ankle brace worn on her ankles.
Little girl, how many weeks have you been wearing an ankle brace?, she asked and the little girl looked at her.
It's been three weeks and I'll be taking it off today, the girl answered gladly and focused on her book again while her mother brushed her daughter's hair.
Few minutes later, Savannah who had been curious about why a little girl would be so focused while reading when she finds it so hard to focus on reading tapped the little girl and the little girl looked at her.
I'm sorry to disturb you but are you reading for a test?, Savannah asked.
No, I'm reading because it's fun, she said with a smile.
Fun?, are you a straight A's student?, she asked curiously.
Yes, the girl said and continued, what of you, are you a straight A's student?.
No, I don't find reading fun, Savannah replied.
Do you repeat your classes every year?, the girl who seemed to be open just like Savannah asked and Savannah shook her head in disagreement. How come you don't repeat your classes every year, the girl asked again.
Well, I read when it's time and I end up having C's, Savannah replied.
Wow, you're a genius!, the girl exclaimed. How can you start reading when it's exam time and you still pass?. I'd advice you to read everytime and you will surely become a top student. That's the secret of being a top student but make sure you understand what you read, if you find any subject hard to understand, see your teachers or tutors, the young girl said as Savannah looked at her like a puppy.
I love that advice, what's your name?, Savannah asked. Andrea James, the girl answered.
What a cute name, thank you, she said and her parents came out of the office. Bye, Andrea, she waved her goodbye as Andrea and her mother entered the office.
I see you made a friend while you were waiting, Mrs Will said and Savannah nodded smiling.
Well, luckily for you, it was a mild ankle sprain, you just need to wear a soft ankle brace and avoid stress or anything that would delay your recovery time, Mr Will said.
Will I be okay with just a soft ankle brace?, Savannah asked.
Of course, let's go home, Mr Will asked.
Mom, dad, as from today, I am going to be serious with my studies, she said enthusiastically and her parents chuckled.
I'm serious, I'll be a top student, Savannah said not letting their laughter weigh her down.
Okay, we believe you can do it, let's just go home, Mr Will said sarcastically trying to hold her laughter.
I mean it, Savannah looking serious as they walked towards the hospital's exit.
