I opened my mouth, a bitter laugh escaping my throat.
“But...”
“I already cleared the poison from your body a long time ago.”
Jacobs froze, his face turning ashen, yet he still forced a smile.
“Stop joking, Evelyn. Are you saying I did all of this myself? How is that possible? I love you and Lily so much, how could I ever intentionally hurt you?”
“Don't worry, I'm really contacting the healers. We'll definitely have a chance to get rid of the poison completely in the future!”
“As for Melissa, I truly have no feelings for her. I only kept her by my side for the antidote.”
“And the pup in her belly—I won't be keeping it!”
Watching his adamant display, I slipped the poison residue I was about to take out back into my pocket, my heart aching with sorrow.
I ignored him, focusing instead on the mind-link coming from Owen:
“Evelyn, I've landed.”
“I'm on my way to you now. Wait for me.”
Jacobs finally seemed to notice that something was off. He stood up, trying to probe my mind-link, but I had already blocked it. His face was contorted with fury.
“Are you sending Melissa provocative mind-links again? She told me everything, said you were cursing her and insulting her.”
“I already told you I would handle this. Why do you have to provoke Melissa?”
I suddenly found it laughable and retorted, “What, does your heart ache for her?”
His face darkened, and just as he was about to speak, he was interrupted by the mind-link.
It was from Melissa.
He answered immediately, his voice unconsciously softening.
“Hello? Melissa? What's wrong? Is Onyx not eating again? Okay, okay, I'll go hunt some fresh meat right now. Wait for me.”
Jacobs disconnected the mind-link and hurried toward the door. Only when he reached the doorway did he seem to remember me.
He paused, turning back to explain guiltily, “I have to get on Melissa's good side so she'll tell me the antidote. I have no other choice.”
“But don't worry, I'm still looking for the Starlight herb for Lily. We'll find a way.”
With that, he rushed away, never once glancing at our pup lying on the stone bed.
My heart was already filled with utter disappointment, but seeing him act like this still sent a thousand tiny needles of pain stabbing into it.
Before long, Owen rushed over. The moment he saw our gaunt, worn-out state, his eyes reddened and his voice trembled:
“I'm so sorry, Evelyn. I'm late.”
“If we can just get her through the night... Lily will be saved, won't she?”
I nodded, the tears I’d been fighting back finally breaking free the moment I saw him.
I don't know how long I cried, but finally, my Lily was out of danger.
My wound had become badly infected, and if Owen hadn't noticed, I wouldn't have even realized I was running a high fever.
When I woke the next day, I had Owen take Lily to the edge of the forest to wait for me. Then, I slipped away alone to Jacobs's alpha den.
I had just stepped into its depths when I heard Melissa and the pack members laughing and talking:
“Oh, please. There's no such thing as a Lustroot Elixir. It was just some harmless little weed, that's all.”
The she-wolf beside her stared, her eyes wide, and said in disbelief:
“Really? Does Alpha Jacobs know?”
A smug smile curled Melissa's lips as she said triumphantly:
“Of course, he knew. It was his idea to use that excuse in the first place. That old bitch was pregnant, and everyone would have crucified him if he'd severed the mate bond.”
“He got a little too into the role after that, so I just played along. Besides, he had already gifted me the entire cave system.”
“And once our pup is born, this little performance will finally be over~”
